Downstairs in the family room/bunny room the only source of heat is our pellet stove, so this time of year naturally we have plenty of pellets on hand.
I’ve been using Feline Pine ($20/40lb bag) and a bag lasts me 1 month. That’s with 4 buns and 7 litter pans (plus a 5th we just started fostering and his pan, too). I use a screen on the top of the pans to keep the poo separate from the pellets. It just makes it so easy to clean.
I’ve tried mixing in hardwood pellets with Feline Pine together and I didn’t have any luck at all. It’s easy to tell the 2 apart because F.P. is a light yellow in color and the hard wood is a grayish brown. When soiled the F.P. broke down in to sawdust and the hardwood pellets were still intact.
I was just reading some comments earlier about Feline Pine and how it’s the same thing as stall pellets which are used for livestock. The difference being stall pellets can be bought at a feed mill for around $6 for a 40lb bag. I was pretty excited to read that as I have to run to the feed mill this week anyhow to pick up corn (we feed the deer) and peanuts (whole; we put in the bird feeder for the woodpeckers).
