Winter and snow?

Hi all,

Winter is coming quick, and as its my first winter with a bun I’m not sure what to do. I usually let my bun outside where she has the most space in a pen (Muffin doesnt often come into the house as there are far too many hiding spaces). I usually let her run around in our utility room but I feel like it isn’t enough. What would be the lowest temperature a bunny could stand comfortably?

I’ve seen pictures and videos of bunnies running round in the snow, and I’m sure Muffin would enjoy the snow too, but I’m worried she would try eat the snow or get too cold. Could you have a bunny safely in the snow?

It’s dependent on the rabbit and it’s comfort, but I think no matter what, no rabbit should be exposed to freezing temperatures and snow for longer than a handful of minutes. Also, the shift in temperatures, if done regularly, can cause illness, like in humans!

If she is an outdoor rabbit, you need to make sure she has enough space since she wont be going in her pen. If you need to add on another run area, do it while you still can. You will also have to make sure her hutch in insulated and protected from snowfall which can also cause soaking on the inside. The inside of the hutch should always be above 40F. You need to make sure her hutch will be able to stay dry and warm enough. When its below freezing outside, youll need to make sure to replace her water bottle multiple times a day to ensure it wont freeze, and/or place insulation over the water bottle as well to keep it warm enough.

Ideally, you would bring your rabbit inside where there are a lot less chances of harm for your rabbit. Get a large cage and a large pen to connect to the cage. Bunny proof all areas inside and around the pen. Get a lid if it makes you feel better about your rabbit escaping and running havoc in the rest of the room
