winnies spay, questions?

Hello Everyone!

Winnie’s Spay is May 17th! I am so nervous I could puke!

the vet said that they have not yet lost a rabbit during a spay. He said its the same as with dogs and cats. He also said that the surgery itself is only about 10-15 mins(which made me feel better) and that its not the surgery if something goes wrong, its the anathestic that usually cause problems.

They said I could feed Winnie the night before but do not feed in her the morning before the spay. Ia m going to bring her hay and pellets with me. I really hope she comes out of this okay.

I would like to know what I should be doing after her spay?  She has her own bedroom, inside is a GIANT dog cage which only has her litter box and food and water, I do not ever lock her in there. How long should I keep her in there for ? Also, her litter box is a cat litter box, the normal small size one but it does have higher edges, what should i do about that? What if she is trying to play and stuff? what if for some miraculous reason she is hyper a day or so after spay, does this happen? 

Also, in the event that she does not eat(MAJOR VIBES)) I dont want to run into that problem.. but if  I do I will try wet veggies, pellet mash. How long after her spay should she be eating and about how many hours should I wait to syringe feed her if she has not eaten or drank?  what do I do with critical care and at what point should I give it to her?   I have also heard things about canned pumpkin?  

Any suggestions? I know the majority of you all have already went through this!!

I am so nervous, shes is my baby and she is just the sweetest little girl. I do not know what I would do if something were to happen to her. I know this is best for her though.

Firstly, make sure you have some way of keeping her warm, as some girls can really struggle to keep warm enough after their spay.

She should not go more than 12 hours without eating, so if she isn’t eating herself by your bedtime, you will need to force feed, and probably get up during the night to give more. Wet greens are a good post-spay food, esp if she has a favourite, as they help with hydration and gut movement, and may tempt her more than pellets or hay.

Most vets advise to feed normally up to the spay, as bunnies cannot be sick anyway, and limiting the amount of time without food is important, I would double check this with your vet?

Thankyou Gina.Jenny! In her cage currently she has One of those really soft bathroom mats the ones that are like memory foam.. she loves and over that she has a fleece blanket. Shoudl I just keep her room more warm then usual and more blankets?

I had to wrap Jenny in warm blankets after her spay, she couldn’t keep her body temp up by herself. As long as you have some way of getting her warmer if she needs it, then she should be fine. Some girls don’t have this problem, Gina was spayed the same day as Jenny, and had no problem keeping warm enough.

As Gina.Jenny said, rabbits are not supposed to be fasted before surgery. Did your vet actually tell you not to feed her the morning of the surgery, or was it a receptionist? A lot of times, a receptionist is not aware of rabbit care, they only know about dogs and cats, who should fast before surgery.

You can add some (plain) canned pumpkin to the Critical Care mixture, or add a little bit of baby food, whatever flavor you think might entice her the most. I have never had to force feed any of the rabbits I had spayed. They started eating on their own right away. Both did well and recuperated quickly.

Even though you don’t want to give too much fruit to a rabbit because of the sugar content, be sure to have some of her favorite fruit on hand in addition to her favorite veggies. Sometimes, a rabbit will eat the Critical Care mixture out of a dish or off of your fingers. If not, you will have to use a syringe and force feed her if she doesn’t eat.

The Receptionist told me, I will be calling today to speak with the vet who will be doing her spay and see what he has to say.
Also, what do you guys think about her litterbox, you think the one she has now will be fine for her? its regular cat litter box, has the high sides.

I picked up a low sided kitten litter tray for Bramble. I think she appreciated it as she still used her tray even though she was feeling rubbish.

The other option is to fill the litter tray really high with carefresh or something, and then fold up a towel a few times as a little step from the outside.
