I really want to get a house rabbit but I’m going away to university in 4 weeks and I’ll only be able to come home every weekend or every other weekend. I don’t know if I bond with the rabbit and then leave it’ll forget me or be upset that I’m not around; should I just wait until I have an apartment that allows rabbits so I can be with my pet every day?

        Thanks

I would wait. Rabbits tend to pick a “favorite” person. That person isn’t always the one who takes care of them, but it can be. Any real bond, I think, would be difficult to maintain once a week or once every other week. I wouldn’t be fair to you or the bun.

I agree with LBJ – he will forget you. You definitely need to be the one to actually care for them day in and day out for them to “remember” you.

              I agree with LBJ10.
Bunnies like routine and come to depend on the person who cares for them on a daily basis. If you come home only a few days each month, you’ll be more of a “visitor” than an owner. And as you can tell if you have read much on this site, bunnies require a lot of attention, a lot of exercise and can cost a lot of money to house correctly and go to the vet for well checks, neutering or sick visits. Do you think the person you’d be leaving your bun with wants to take all that on? Then it would really be more like THEIR pet. Wait til you are in a better position to devote your time, attention and finances to your bun so both you and bun can ” fall in love” with eachother – it will be worth it!
