Hi everyone, I seriously believe my 3 year old Lionhead house bunny Kizzie has (accidentally) become pregnant on a play date with what we thought was our friends female house bunny. Kizzie is very plump and chunky I would say a healthy 10 lbs buri fear she may not make it through the birthing process if she is in fact pregnant. I have always heard that if a rabbit is more than a year or two old and she has a litter her womb may not be big enough or other complications may occur and the female mom sometimes doesn’t make it. If you all think a few pics of her would help determine if she’s big enough to not worry about it I can take some. Any help is really appreciated guys, I love my Kizzums and hope this wasn’t a horrible accidental fatal mistake on my part

If I was in your situation I would consult a vet and see if you can get her spayed to prevent the pregnancy.

You beat me to it Sarita… Was going to suggest an emergency spay also… I think it would be the best option under the circumstances.

I agree with the others. If this just happened (the potential mating), you would have time to get her spayed (as long as it’s within about 2 weeks of the conception).

Well she has started the nesting process, and that play date was over 2-3 weeks ago. My fiancé thinks she can feel movement inside her, I can’t tell. Plus she’s so plump I can’t tell if there are babies inside her or not. What do you think the chances are she will be safe having them at the age of 3 and this being her first and only litter? :-/

We don’t have the knowledge to answer that for you. I would contact your vet and let them know the situation. Unfortunately, mothers and/or babies do sometimes pass during or shortly after the birth. Having your vet “on stand by” so to speak will be helpful in case you have to rush her in.

Bugger…. Gestation is generally 28-32 days so if she is nesting it is probably too late.
Make sure she has a box or secluded area in her cage to nest… Ensure a good regular supply of fresh greens, hay and pellets and above all try to make sure she is not overly stressed by loud noises or people… The box should be big enough that she can stand up inside. Seal it and cut a hole in the front in the middle. Lots of hay and newspaper should be available for her to fill the box.
Speak to your vet and advise them of the situation in case you need to take her in quickly… You could also have your vet take a look now as it is possibly a false pregnancy, however if she has gained weight then it probably isn’t.
If she does have a litter you might want to see about getting her spayed as soon as the babies are weened.
Aside from that nature will just have to take its course. An immediate vet visit would still be a good idea if for no other reason than to confirm if she is pregnant and whether she is well enough to survive.

It might indeed be too late for this litter to be prevented, and you are right, there can be complications. Unfortunately nobody here knows how to spot these, and they could be fatal. It is in your best interest, and your rabbit’s, to take her in to a rabbit savy vet.

They can not only give your rabbit it’s best chances of survival, but help you keep your sanity when the little bubs show up. Ooops litters are never a stress-less experience, and whether over 3 years or not, you are going to want some professional help.

Everything Roberta said is like a lifeline for you, she knows what you are going through so it’s a safe bet to follow what she said.

                      Good luck…
