We’ve been under threat of evacuation due to a 45,000 acre wildfire that is encroaching on our area from the nearby military base.

We have been fortunate to have a little rain this evening, but we could sure use some more and for the temps and humidity to remain at a level where the firefighters can knock this beast down.

The idea of having to leave our home and everything in it and get ourselves and the animals out as quickly as possible on one little two lane road is paralyzing.

Could we have vibes that the fire will be put out and no firefighters will be injured during this very dangerous season? We already had one wildfire on our only road into and out of town a few weeks ago and it was terrifying.

        Many thanks in advance!

                      Thanks everyone
Well we’re still on evac watch, but the weather was cooler today and my OH felt safe enough to run to town for a few supplies here just a bit ago (30 miles each way) so hopefully the fire is burning away from us. It is up to 50,000 acres now and had left the military base and moved mostly onto state land.
There were hoses laid up and down our street last night (the military or local volunteers’ work I think) and the air was all misty from the brief rain we had. You couldn’t hear anything but sled dogs barking at the unusual firefighter activity…it was like all our neighbors had left, (but I can hear them today so they are still here.) It was eerie. 0_0
Still very tense despite reassurances. Apparently they will be dropping stupidant and water on us before the evac order goes out. (There goes all my clean forage for the bunnies!)
Just hoping no one decides to get drunk this weekend and start lighting (illegal) fireworks. The city and borough has banned them but that doesn’t stop idiots from coming out here to the wilds and setting them off. (eyeroll)
I’ll definitely be calling the troopers if I hear/see so much as a sparkler!

Ugh. July 4th, of course! You’d have to have your head examined to think lighting fireworks with that fire going was a good idea. I hope no morons make this more dire.

The types of fires we’ve had in Aus this past decade scares me. I think the ferocity of them has increased world-wide really.

                        Very relieved to hear you’re currently in a safer situation. {{{MM & co.}}}

Would be nice if that “stupidant” would work on the people with illegal fireworks.. heh.

This evening, a bit of a break.
Fires that were creeping directly towards us appear to be OUT.
Weather has been cooler (although quite windy) today and possible rain tonight. The wind blew a lot of the fire back on itself as well and it’s being pushed away from us, but still in the direction of the road to the east. (Thank you God! Still praying for the folks who live up there though and that the wind won’t change and bring it back down here.)
If temps/conditions stay cool/moist we’ll have more time to fire proof our place and we have more time to evac if we need to.
It would be ideal if the whole thing were out, but it’s at least been downgraded to 30,000 acres from the 50,000 they estimated earlier. I was awakened this morning by a scary flyover though (it was stunt planes for the city’s 4th celebration-I thought it was the stupidant drop!) 0_0
We had lots of activity around the subdivision today and that made for some VERY nervous hours.

Many thanks for all the vibes and prayers! They are being heard!

So sorry, I CANNOT imagine what you are going through! Happy that things have improved slightly, … you are in my prayers, you and all those people living near to you. At least you seem to have gotten through the Fourth without any helpful idiots adding to your problems.

Gosh, MM, I am just seeing this now.
Glad that it looks like things are improving and nothing worse happened due to the 4th.
The fires out west have been all over the news here, but no mention of those in Alaska.
Sending a few poofs of vibes to blow out the last of the fires. That is one of my biggest fears.

Just going to cross post this since I’ve had to update so many folks….

Not really looking good at the moment.
The good news (sorta) is, the military has admitted to causing the fire, but we can’t get anyone to say they will drop stupidant on the houses (although “all measures will be taken to prevent property destruction” whatever that means) but there is a caveat that if your house is considered indefensible then they won’t bother.
We need a 30 foot perimeter ideally. Tough to get that without a dozer at this point.
Too much smoke to go out there and really dig right now, will have to be first thing when the wind is blowing in the opposite direction…if it does.

There is talk that with the southern and southeast winds (which are ironically bringing rains) that the fire will reach the river by tomorrow (night?). Then it just has to cross the field and the lower half of the subdivision before it will reach us. Rain will not likely get here till Monday, Tuesday at the latest and no idea how strong it will be.

We have 24 hours to try to finish burn proofing the house. But technically, they are hinting people should think about leaving soon.

                                        I am very worried.

OH says if the fire hasn’t reached us by Monday he’ll break out the chainsaw and weed whacker (despite the fines-$7000 if they catch you using them) and start dropping trees. His (business) buildings have foliage way too close yet. Sadly that is where I’m leaving all the family pictures since there is no room in the evac vehicle.

We’ll be leaving probably before they give the order unless they catch us unawares in the middle of the night or something.

Please pray (or whatever) for the winds to die down or the rains to get here quicker. I’m trying desperately to lighten the load and we’re looking for places to stay in town, we may wind up having to rent a house (weekly rates for a room are as expensive!) but I don’t doubt we’ll get some use of our tents for perhaps one night…provided it’s not bucketing down.

The kids are past stressed. So am I and I don’t even want to think where OH is mentally…. Way on down the road and around the corner from that.

So things have taken a turn for the worse, although tonight the air has cleared somewhat but it was a very smoky day today and no idea really how close the fire is going to get overnight.
I barely have room for the bubs and kitties, plus Jenna. Ebon will ride in another car with OH and son, I have to take daughter in ahead of them.

                                        Very VERY scared right now.

There’s no reports of injuries or worse so that bodes well. It might take them some time to return and I am assuming there may be some disruption to power and communications.

Yes, we’re all okay, house still standing (I think only military structures as casualties so far but not sure) and pets all back home and happier than being cooped up in carriers.
More rain/cooler temps for tomorrow, but a warming trend after that. 15 % containment on the fire. We can hope they can get a better grip on it before the humidity goes poof.
I will elaborate more if anybody wants me to, but for tonight I am getting my tired butt to bed a.s.a.p. Thank you all for the vibes and prayers. We were so glad to hear that the rain had come and the evac order was lifted. There’s the possibility we’d have to bug out again, but I am REALLY hoping it doesn’t come to that. All of us are stretched to the ends of our tethers and I am sure that is how everyone feels out here. We need a break from this already.

There are several agencies and websites you can get updates from. The AICC, North Star Volunteer Firefighters, Daily News-Miner, Inciweb http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3468/, and https://twitter.com/Info_CIIMT1.

Here is also terrifying video by someone at 26 mile CHSR who caught the blaze as it spotted across the river two days ago. This portion of the fire is now contained.
                                                                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVUh1-spNTY&feature=player_embedded
We could see the glow from over the trees to the northeast as we bailed. Horrifying and the smoke plume was like a volcano. I truly never thought I’d see my house again. God intervened though, and we are grateful!

Thanks again for all vibes and prayers. Bless you all. xxxx

Since the weather has been inclement there have been no aircraft suppression activities today. I don’t know what that bodes for the leading edge of the fire.
Roads are difficult to traverse as well. No idea how the ground crews are managing.

No we are still on evacuation watch, but the rain and mist and moisture were SO very welcome this last few days. Warmer temps in the offing this weekend. No further rain forecast until Tuesday. Today is actually partly sunny and warmer and you can hear the air support going at the lines not far from us. The map has not changed, no growth from the last few days on the perimeter. But they were also not really able to access much of the containment/contingency lines either, so not sure of their progress there. I saw one quote of 25% containment but it is in two places.

I drove by the camp in the baseball field near our area last night…holy cow…you’ve never seen so many firemen getting drenched and cold in one place. Impressive. I just want to give them all a group hug. <3

Community meeting tonight to hear what’s up. So very jittery and nervous but trying to relax anyway because I am setting Jenna off terribly and she is not herself. The last time I saw her like this was while she was recovering from a near fatal attack of vasculitis and I do NOT want that coming back.

OH has actually managed to get an old motor home that we’ve had parked for years running (and I mean OLD, it is not the nicest thing but it will do in a pinch) so that if we do have to get out again we’ll have a rent free place to take our stuff and the animals. AND no outhouse…a working toilet….YAY.

I just hope the old fossil will make it down the road! LOL….

Thank you Grey Dove, I wish we could grab some of that precip!
Meeting conclusion tonight is that if we can manage 3 more days without another evac, we should be in the clear.
Downside is: some of the pumps to propel the water in the area have gone missing. Possibly stolen. It’s either problematic kids in the neighborhood or firemen have moved them without informing the main camp (although that is highly unlikely).
Unsure if they have been replaced or if there is a call out for the property to be returned, but it is not a happy thought.
Amazing how even out in the middle of nowhere, vandalism is still a problem.

MimzMum That is simply terrible! Bad enough to steel etc., but to take something as vital as pumps when property and lives depend on them, .. you’ve really got to pity some people because they truly are pathetic. Hope they turn up.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you and count down those three days! Please do let us know how it goes.

And for both our sakes I dearly wish I could send the rain over. While you are so dry our crops are literally drowning in the fields (until a week ago there was standing water in them), and I feel as though I moved to a blinking jungle, and no one asked me if I wanted to! Its not the first summer I’ve desperately wished I could take a big wooden spoon to the atmosphere and give it a good stir, such imbalance, find it hard to understand.

                                                                                    Praying for rain for you!

Hi guys! Been a dicey few days. Many thanks for all good wishes for us here!
Temps have really risen and dried out much of the area. Thanks to the work of the firefighters, we have good containment lines over what is estimated to be 57% of the fire now. The one area that is raging off is to the north and east of us. They are working hard to control those areas now.
Our evacuation watch is still on because there are a few spots that they fear could run with the right conditions. Tuesday is the earliest for any rain.

Yesterday I took the bunnies to see their best vet. (Nerve wracking drive worrying about my OH, daughter and the dogs and cats who were waiting at home, but son went with me to help carry bunnies.) They all passed their physicals well. Pip needs to lose weight/move more because she has pretty good sludge in her bladder (hard to believe since she only eats hay and drinks water) and I was worried about her eyes because they appeared to be bulging, but her pressure is well within normal limits Dr H says it’s probably her weight that is making the whites appear more often, so perhaps her blood pressure is high. Her heart sounded good though.
Mimzy is creaky but still doing well enough that the vet was happy with him. He needed a serious ear cleaning as his waxy buildup was good enough to grow potatoes. He is making smallish poos today due to being in a hot car for a few hours yesterday and stress I would assume. He doesn’t do well in those tiny carriers, poor bub.
Fiver has some nasty sore hocks but she only prescribed more of his Heal X cream. He may have wrenched his back a bit during the evac because it is touchy above his hips. If he would just relax when I pick him up, but he’s a flailer. His heart also sounded good which always worries me to have checked because rexes and mini-rexes can have bad hearts.
They all got nail trims and bum inspections to be certain they had no parasites.
They all shed terribly, make extra cecals when stressed and get mucky bum as a result. It’ll take a few days to normalize, but I wonder if I shouldn’t have asked the vet if I should begin metaclopromide at least for Mimzy again. His gut just hasn’t worked 100% right since the head tilt. He did have the beginnings of a spur on his down side, but not enough that Dr H wanted to trim it as he just had that done in May.

Before heading out to the vet yesterday I was walking Jenna and found that the neighbors who evacuated a week ago (and haven’t returned) left one of their goats here. Poor little guy was standing at the end of their driveway and making a weird noise with his mouth that sounded like he was passing wind until I began to move and then he bleated at me at full volume thinking I was leaving without him. He is a tripod, his left rear leg is missing a hoof and the remainder has atrophied to he point it just hangs there. He’s a spunky cuss though and won’t let me near him. I called animal control and they said as long as there is no evac order and he seems to be okay, they won’t retrieve him, but if conditions change or he seems in distress, I have the personal cell phone number of the doctor who heads the team. So I can call her at any time if we need to get him out of here. We made sure he had fresh water and hay and left him to it, but it bothers me because he’s obviously lonely for company, but doesn’t want to be touched, so it will be an adventure for anyone who wants to try to grab him. I also can’t find anywhere to contain him so he is wandering about the property and occasionally comes onto ours! (I realize now that a bunch of what I thought were wild bunny poos in our driveway last week are goat poos!) 0_0

Any more vibes or prayers going spare that the fire gets put out or the rain gets here sooner are greatly appreciated! I’ve had quite enough of this and I’m sure everyone else out here has too!

Sounds like the vet visit went ok. When all settles, how do you feel about trying Mimz and Pip together again? Would get them both moving during visiting each other at least. Which would be good for weight or a sluggish gut. Stress is the gamble though.

Is Pip moving well these days? Posturing can sometimes be cause of the sediment staying put in the bladder.

I’m totally unsure about pairing Mimz and Pip again, mostly because he is pretty delicate compared to her, he gets nippy and agitated with another bun in the vicinity. I fear they would injure each other.
I may try to pair Fiver and Pip at some point. I don’t want her hurting him either though. She is not as interested in him.

It’ll take some thought. I might just have to chase her around her habitat a few times a day to keep her going. Don’t want to do it to stress, just a nudge on the bum to encourage movement.

OH says fire is still flaring on the hillsides across the river from us. Not a happy thought, but they’re keeping air support going, so I’m sure they’ll let us know if something’s amiss.
