Hey everyone! For those of you who follow/visit Wick’s instagram page ( http://www.instagram.com/wick_theboogeyman/ ), you may know he’s been going through some trouble at the moment. Like with Wick’s past URI, I want to post for educational and informative purposes, as well as hoping for good vibes for him, which I’ve very much appreciated so far.
Following Wick’s third molar grinding procedure, he didn’t bounce back immediately as usual. At 11mo, Wick is racking up a lot of medication and going-under experience, haha. A follow-up visit was scheduled and after examining his teeth more closely, we suspect he may have a tooth infection that was aggravated by the last grinding.
Wick was put on Flagyl, which is usually loved by rabbits since my vet compounds it (turns the powder into a liquid, typically adding food for taste) with banana. After the first administration, Wick absolutely hated taking Flagyl. I’d given him antibiotics over 180 times and his reaction to smelling the banana-Flagyl syringe was the saddest I’ve seen. After a week of trouble shooting with potential gas, it was clear Flagyl gave Wick immediate gastric distress after a dose, hence he hated it. He made the association very quickly that it’s that antibiotic that made him feel bad. Typically, pairing an antibiotic with a probiotic will quell any gastric discomfort, but with Flagyl, the probiotic wasn’t good enough. Wick and Flagyl just did not mesh well. He very-much communicated this with me by peeing on the floor, sofa, dresser, etc…. multiple times. When Wick feels discomfort, his trek-to-litter-box for peeing disappears.
Wick had an appointment yesterday and we’ve taken him off Flagyl and he’ll be medication free (sans probiotic, which he’ll get twice daily as usual until this tooth infection is gone) until this Wednesday. Starting this Wednesday, Wick will get a shot of flocillin (penicillin), which is a long-term antibiotic, every three days. Sounds scary, but Wick had this during his URI treatment, so both him and I can handle it and know it’s something he tolerates well. Plus he gets a strawberry treat and/or lots of pets after a shot, so he’ll be fine.
Unlike the URI, this tooth infection is tough because it’s a guessing game in how long we need to administer antibiotic. It’s nothing we can see, but it’s the best explanation for his discomfort following his latest dental procedure. He definitely is much more himself now though, which makes everyone happy.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes! If anyone has experience with treating tooth infections, let me know below and your experience. A bit like Wick’s URI treatment, this is a bit of a guessing game for timeline, but Wick is doing well and is very healthy despite his seemingly consistent track record of health maladies.
