Hello! I’m hoping you lovely people can help me out.

I’m new to owning a bunny just got him on dec 26. So far things are good, i got a total sweetheart cuddle bug! But I’m a bit worried im not feeding him enough. I give oxbow pellets in the morning as much as bag directs, a large handful of leafy greens at night and then round the clock timothy hay that gets replaced fresh daily. He is just starting to be a decent hay eater; i know how important that is but when its pellet time he goes crazy! You would think I haven’t fed him in weeks the way he bounces around and manages to start eating it before i even put the bowl down.

Im worried im starving him but i don’t necessarily want to increase the pellets because i feel it will discourage his hay eating.

Any insight would be great, im a bit nervous for him.

        Thanks!!

Almost all bunnies act like they’re starving when it’s pellet or veg time so I wouldn’t worry!

A bun should be very hungry. It’s when they’re not that you should worry.

You could weigh him once a week and note down his week. If he’s a baby, his weight should go up (obviously) but if he’s 5-6 months or above, his weight should be a lot more stable. It’s a good way of ensuring that your bun gets an appropriate amount of food.

It is true that feeding more pellets and greens makes a bun eat less hay, and hay is the most important bunny food there is, so you want him to eat lots of hay.

Because he is so very greedy for pellets, I suggest you don’t serve them in a bowl but rather scatter them so he has to look for them. This is to slow his eating down. A greedy bun can choke on pellets, and and that’s very dangerous. Another alternative is to give him his pellets in a treat ball so he has to work for them.

IMO, bunnies are worse than dogs!!! Some are worse than others. We call my big boy “Starvin Sterling”.

My boy Bandit is the smaller of the 2 buns and he is starving 24/7! Well he thinks he is haha. He gets 1/2 cup pellets and unlimited hay and when its salad time he practically jumps the pen trying to get at it quicker…and don’t even think about eating a banana to yourself in this house! LOL
