So Pumpkin’s Christmas presents from Binky Bunny came yesterday…in a perfectly sized box to put hay in. I’ve been trying to come up with something better than putting her hay into her litter box b/c she pees and poops all over it. A hay rack isn’t going to work in her new condo so I thought hey…why not put her hay into the BB box NEXT to her litter box.
I felt like a genius!

For about two whole minutes…

Why…why…do you have to be such a pain my rear end Pumpkin?! In the words of AndHenry: “Dam Bunny!” ![]()

Are you or your hubby handy with a saw and drill? The hay feeders my hubby made work really well and will hang on the NIC grids. The spaces are large enough for even our lops to forage in but not too large that all the hay falls out, and they hold quite a bit of hay. Will try to post a pic later from my laptop.
(We tried every type of hay feeder out there and ended up making our own.)
Yes, yes please pictures!!! Hubby is Mr. Fix It-Do It Yourselfer….we could finagle something!
Food always tastes better when you’re sitting on it! It’s how I eat every meal. lol
JR, I was going to ask you and your hubby to make Ox a hay feeder but then I realized he probably wouldn’t use it. I bought Ox the willow hay rack from the BB store for his Birthday, even trimmed it down to match his old box but the little stink refused to eat hay out of it! I’m still stuck with the same hefty blackout trash bag box. I want nice looking things, Ox! Bah.
I just realized that Pumpkin has a great view of outside. How neat!
MisGabster she likes to periscope and watch her friend Pistachio the squirrel play in the front yard!
That is frustrating. If you cut a few square holes into the box and hang it next to the litter box, that might entice her to eat AND keep her out.
I understand your pain! I can’t get anything nice for my rabbits because Wally will poop on it and, if it is soft, Albus will pee on it. -___- There goes the entire shelf of cute pet stuff, completely off-limits to me.
OK, the feeder.
First let me explain how we got here so you’ll see some
things to take into consideration if you decide to build a feeder.
We tried a bunch of different feeders (metal, wooden,
baskets, etc.). This feeder is the first
one we found that didn’t waste a bunch of hay.
It came with a mesh insert but we removed it because the buns couldn’t
get much hay from it. Removing the
insert made the opening too big and hay just fell out, so hubby made an insert
with small dowels. This feeder worked
but didn’t hold enough hay for Moshi the hay monster. And, the company went out
of business. Here’s that feeder:
Next, we found a feeder that was big enough, but there wasn’t
enough space between the slats or at the lowest opening to handle a smooshy lop
face (the bottom opening worked for Kieko and she still has this as one of her
feeders). Here’s that feeder:

So, we took what we liked of the various feeders and made
this:

Dimensions: 11.5
inches wide, 11.5 inches tall, 5.5 inches deep at the top, 3 inches deep at the
bottom (enough to allow the hay to drop as the hay level lowers). The openings are around 4.25 inches wide and
around 3 inches tall (big enough for our lop faces to reach in and not get
stuck but not large enough for the bunny to climb inside the feeder). Made of
Poplar. The feeder can be made wider by adding another column of openings, or
taller. The size of the bunny’s head
should be taken into consideration when determining the size of the openings.
Feeders inside the M&M’s kitchen/bathroom crate:
Side view (we wedge a dowel above each feeder in the
M&Ms area to keep Moshi from trying to lift the feeders off the crate – the
feeders are pretty heavy, but Moshi is persistant!):

Close up of hooks.
Hooks MUST be inserted at 45 degree angle in order to hook onto crate or
NIC grid! Also, turning the hooks a
little inward or outward after hanging the feeder helps keep it in place.

Feeder in use (this pic is older and is from back when we
were using medium cat litterboxes). Even
though there are two feeders, the M&Ms like to do everything together!

Feeder in Kieko’s condo:

JR–thank you SO MUCH for the pictures/tutorial! Hubby thinks he can either make or modify something similar to what your bunnies have. I like the feeders that have a wider bottom, so the hay goes into the litter box and not outside the condo into the corners of the floor. We have a ton of hay on hand right now (Black Friday specials and my step-dad gave us bunch–they have Llamas and Horses) so it doesn’t FEEL as wasteful right now, but I know that we are wasting a ton of hay daily. And with a feeder, I can get a better view of her poops (you know I’m paranoid about my poops! ha!). These pictures are so very helpful!
It’s cute that she has a friend.
Those hay racks look great JackRabbit! I love how the M&Ms eat side by side like that.
LLH — yes, a back on the feeder is a must! Back when we tried “mesh” type metal feeders, it seemed like hay was always outside the condo or cage on the floor. Now, that just happens if we get in a hurry when filling the feeders and don’t take them down to refill (normally we set the feeder in the hay box to fill). I thought we’d have a problem with the buns chewing on the feeders (why we used poplar) since Marlee chews EVERYTHING, but so far so good! The hardest part was that I wanted everything super smooth with no little spaces for whiskers to get caught so hubby had to make sure to sand everything really well!
He should sell them! He did a wonderful job!
LLH — aside from his regular job, hubby is an artist. Just like with the perfectionist he is with his drawings, I don’t think I could live through him making and selling hay feeders!
Haha I too live with quite the perfectionist! I feel your pain!
I have half the box with bedding/litter material and the other half with hay. Flops jumps in and has to turn around to orient herself to eat the hay and the other side of the hay gets the droppings and pee. this generally works although sometimes the hay and bedding get mixed which annoys me but not her lol
LLH LOL!
JR – Bloody brilliant! I’ll take one thanks…..
AH — will see if hubby can modify to have a coke can holder on one side and dog food bowl on the other. We’ll call it the Urban Bunny model.
Perfect! Tell the hubby Henry expects it for Christmas!
Bunny Christmas shopping – DONE!
Lol….
The picture of her 2 minutes later made me laugh a lot. Mine does this aswell. No matter how small the space she will always manage to fit her big butt in it!!
And then gives me a look of triumph as if she has beaten me!
Jack Rabbit thanks for sharing those feeders – has given me a few ideas ![]()
