So after a long absence from normal dentistry appointments, my daughter finally got into the office for a cleaning today because she’s had a tooth that has been bothering her for some months. Apparently this is one they would’ve liked to hae done a root canal on back in September. Don’t ask me why we didn’t have it done, something must have prevented it.
At any rate, she now has to have this pulled before it abscesses (I think of our bunnies when I hear that word), and she doesn’t want IV anesthesia because she hates needles in her arm so much. (In previous surgeries/medical procedures this was the worst part for her.) She is willing to do the ‘laughing gas’ method, except that now she’s afraid she’ll wake up during the surgery and be in agony.
Has anyone else had this done? (Yes, this will be separate from her wisdom tooth removal, most likely, as they have to get to this one fast before it ulcerates and her wisdoms haven’t erupted yet though they are on the way.)
I had all my wisdoms pulled under IV anesthesia, so I can’t help her here…who’s had the deed done with gas and possibly a valium kicker and how was the experience for you?
No horror stories please…just the facts, ma’am. lolz… I hope to be able to ease her fears here a bit.
Thankies! ![]()
I had a molar pulled a year or 2 back. No IV anesthesia, didn’t get put under. Just normal numbing by the dentist. It did hurt a bit even with the numbing, but I got through it. Vicodin after helped lol.
If the tooth is infected, ask the dentist (LOL… I wanted to type “vet”, I’m so used to that!) about having her on a prescription for an antibiotic prior to the extraction. Infections can inhibit the absorption of the anesthetic, requiring more, and increasing the risk she’ll still feel something. All she should feel is just a lot of pulling and pressure, no pain. That said, the pulling and pressure is sometimes worse for people psychologically.
I’ve had normal teeth pulled before I got braces and it really only required Novocaine in my gums – no IV or laughing gas. When I had my wisdom teeth out I did have an IV and I think it was necessary – I did wake up and felt uncomfortable, though they had put so much Novocaine in by that point that it wasn’t painful, just uncomfortable. Some of those had to be extracted through the gums, so it was a bit more difficult than just pulling “normal” teeth.
I’ve had two teeth pulled and my wisdom teeth removed with just nitrous oxide and novocaine in my gums without any problems it all. It’s a weird sensation (especially the wisdom teeth) to know that what’s happening and to hear the pulling or the drilling and know that it must really hurt but be too high and numb to care, lol. But I find that drugs in general effect me a bit more than most people and I was so beyond caring that I probably would have been ok if my dentist had turned out to be Steve Martin’s character in Little Shop of Horrors! My mom was a dental hygienist for 20 years at an office that did all procedures with only the gas and novocaine and has never told me any horror stories about it, and knowing her, she probably would have if there were any to tell! The shot of novocaine in my gums to numb my mouth hurt more than anything else frankly.
And on that note
If your dentist looks or sounds like this, it’s time to leave!

Well I had a horror story of a tooth pulling when I was about 4 years old. A few years ago, I need a tooth pulled that didn’t come in right. It was just behind the rest of my teeth and made problems when brushing, etc. So I was terrified of getting it pulled. All that was used to numb me was the novacaine. It took maybe 5 seconds for him to pull the tooth. And that was it. Grant it, I was sore once the novacaine wore off. I think for a few days after too. I can’t really remember that part. I don’t believe I had a prescription for any pain killer. It was definitely A LOT better than getting wisdom teeth out.
Thanks everyone.
We talked to her oral surgeon today and we’re set up for a consult next Friday.
With my daughter it’s mostly that she hates heparin locks. Having to have an IV needle stuck in her arm makes her almost manic with fear. No amount of pre-appointment nerve relaxants help. When she was little, we had to take her to the ER because she was dehydrated from the flu (we hadn’t seen it come on, it was so subtle) and I had to be the one to hold her down while they tried to run a fluid line. She was almost foaming at the mouth by the time they got her set up. She’s never forgotten that, nor the time she had to have surgery under GA for removal of a cyst and another IV and she was miserable the whole time, just wanted to rip the thing out of her arm and run screaming.
She can for the most part deal okay with pain, but just certain kinds set her off. For example, having Novocaine and a filling drilled…no problem, whereas I’m the kind of person who’d rather be knocked out six ways from Sunday and just wake up about a week later for all I care…just don’t make me watch the procedure! But if you have to give my daughter a shot or tell her she has to have a mole removed…you’re in for a major confrontation.
I had four wisdoms, one impacted and infected. (She’s lucky she has just two, we’ll discuss their extraction when we see the doc next week. If this procedure goes well, we’ll use the same thing for her wisdom teeth.)
I just had them put the brace on my arm and put me down and when I woke up I hardly realized time had passed, but it had been hours because they were so difficult to remove. Even my sis-in-law claimed she could hear the doc pulling on the teeth from the waiting room!
I was so out of it afterwards, it was funny as heck. You’d think I’d been on a bender. lolz….
Ugh…All this talk of dentists is making me queasy. My dentist keeps telling me that I will have to get my lower wisdoms removed soon. I can handle needles in my arm no problem but needles in the mouth….That’s another story. Most times the dentist gives you the option of the gas at the dentist or anasthesia at the hospital. Not sure which method I will go for.
((((Vibes to your daughter))))))))

My cousin kept wanting to go buy something after he woke up from getting his wisdom teeth out. My aunt had to keep him from leaving the house! LOL
I was absolutely terrified to get my wisdom teeth out so I went to an oral surgeon to be knocked out. So I say for that type of thing, ALWAYS opt for getting knocked out. LOL
Pull just pulling a tooth shouldn’t be a huge thing as I found out. At least with my tooth, it was such a simple thing. They just numbed me really good and then popped it out. Bleeding was minimal too. I think I had the same instructions as with wisdom teeth – gargle with salt water for the few days and don’t use straws.
Mimzy – I am surprised they didn’t prescribe an antibiotic for your daughter’s tooth infection though.
They don’t really want to have to do that if it’s not necessary. So far, it hasn’t become abscessed, but they want to get it out before it does.
Of course, now that she knows how bad it is, she can’t leave the thing alone. Lots of poking at it with her tongue and whatnot. I told her not to make it any worse than it already is.
Another big worry isn’t so much the extraction itself, since we know she’ll be feeling better afterwards, as it is that we don’t have to do this during a certain time of month…if you know what I mean. She doesn’t do ANYTHING during that time because she is always feeling so ill.
I know that feeling, I can barely get myself out of bed those days >.<
When I had my wisdom teeth out, they gave me laughing gas before the IV, so I never even felt it go in…and I woke up after it was out. If they hadn’t told me I was going to have it, I wouldn’t have known. Could they do that, or would that still freak her out too much?
I know my Dad had his wisdom’s removed without being knocked out (he had a heart condition at the time they didn’t want to mess with). He survived, but definitely remembers the experience! I’ve had baby teeth removed without being knocked out (just shots of novicaine), but I think that those are really different.
i had my 4 wisdom teeth plus 2 molars all pulled at the same time. i’m very afraid of needles and do not remember if i had an iv or not. lol. i def remember the laughing gas. so either it was gas alone or they put in an iv after i was out. all i know is it seemed like a second between the last thing i remember ( that the gas smelled sweet) and the assistant asking if i was ok to walk unassisted to the recovery room. i thought i was just fiiiiiiiiiiiiine but when i got up i teetered across the room and needed assistance after all. lol. no horror stories here. just thankful for the drugs they gave me beause i’m a huge sucky-poo. the worst of it was trying to swallow pills without moving my tongue around (didn’t want to feel anything gross in the process). good luck to your daughter! i’m sure she’ll be just fine =)
