White spots inside the eye?

Last night I looked inside my bunny’s left eye, and I saw white spots forming around the pupil (around the inner side of the iris). At times, the iris seemed to be a bit bigger in the affected eye. I called the veterinary emergency, as it was Easter, but the vet told me, that if the bunny is eating and otherwise looks healthy, it’s nothing to worry about, but I could bring him in after the holidays.

At first I thought my poor bun had a strangely shaped cataract, but it didn’t resemble any of the example photos in the internet. I also checked how his left eye reacted to my finger and thinner objects by moving them towards the eye from different angles, and it was fine. Also, he runs around the house and hops on things/runs through his tunnels as accurately as ever. 

Then I suspected an E.Cuniculi infection, and I thought until midday that it must be thecase, when I noticed that the white blotches are getting smaller. The pupil is still oddly shaped, like a flower, but it’s slowly getting to what it should be.

Has anyone else had this kind of encounter? The rabbit has no other problems whatsoever – no eye/nasal discharge, be haviour and eating as usual, except he is a bit pissed off at me for all the eye tests I made him do, insisting that I should be petting him instead of all that nonsense . But after a few Pak Choi leaves we are as good as ever

Strangely enough, it has almost completely gone back to normal, the iris is a bit bigger, but the white spots are almost non-existent. I’m completely baffled by this, could anyone have a clue what this might be? I already arranged for antibiotics in case of it being E. Cuniculi. I read about fat stored behind the eye…but I doubt that disappears so quickly.

I’ve been monitoring Gustav very closely and he is as friendly and playful as ever, eats a lot, drinks, runs around. Vet hasn’t got a clue.

Could someone know what this might be? Or am I stressing over nothing again?

Did you see the vet? Did the vet prescribe the medication for E. Cuniculi? If not, then you should see a vet because it could be many things and we would all be guessing just like you and we really cannot diagnose your rabbit – it wouldn’t be right.

Yes, I was with the local vet – unfortunately, I live in Latvia, and veterinary care here is not really what it should be. The vet basically told me he’s got no idea, the rabbit seems fine, and that it’s probably from an inflammation that has healed itself. Well, at least I got him vaccinated. Thank God, his eye is getting back to normal very rapidly, he is as happy as can be, binkying around and demanding petting. Basically I really want to find out if someone has had a similar experience, I’ve read every article about rabbit eye problems I could get my hands on. Sarita, big thanks for replying . That can be frustrating not being able to find a vet who knows rabbits! Glad his eye is getting better.

Thank you soo much! I asked rabbit farmers about it….they basically told me what to give him if it reappeared. But for now, he is alright. The pupil has returned to normal. There’s still a small bluish- gray stripe, but it’s very vague and you can’t really see it.
Yup, it’s hard to get a normal diagnosis around here even for a human, let alone pets. Basically, they tell you they are as baffled as you are, make some assumptions and collect their 40 EUR fee.
Hopefully, everything will be fine. He is as happy as rabbitly possible. Today he even came when I called his name, he is the best rabbit ever!

I didn’t have anything to add, but I have been watching this thread. I am curious as to what the rabbit farmers told you about it?

Well, they told me it could be an acute inflammation or E. Cuniculi infection. But, luckily enough his eye is perfect now. I also came across a study paper about the Vienna gene, which also could explain some weird shadowy stuff in the eye, and a friend told me my rabbit is Vienna Blue. (I wasn’t quite sure about Klimt’s breed, because I got him from irresponsible owners, who thought that he was going to be a super tiny Angora rabbit and could be kept in 50x40cm cage)

Yes, that is my little Gustav. Yeah, he is a lop, but a friend of mine thinks he is mixed with the Vienna breed, because she had one exactly like Gustav. Well, I got him in exchange for a chocolate bar, so you can imagine, he came to me with no documents, and the breed is guesswork He is very cute and very very clever, once he got here and got to hop around more (in contrast to the measly 20 minutes in his former home), he opened up quite a bit. He loves to be petted and even held and he even poses for paintings and pictures whenever he is in the mood. It took only 2 days to litter train him. I do everything with him, we even watch TV together. I couldn’t think of a better pet than a rabbit, and I’ve had all sorts of animals.
