Where do you put your buns hay?

Hey! This is my first post here on BB I’ve tried out lots of ways to put hay into my rabbits x pens and I was wondering how you guys all give hay to your rabbits?

I tried the hay racks, although these were messy and my buns were never able to rummage through the hay as they liked. Then I started putting the hay into brown paper bags to sort of make it like a game for them. Plus this allowed my buns more access to graze and pick out the pieces they liked. Although the mess was a bit much.

Now I have experimented with hay in the litter box, although for my picky senior girl (11 almost 12) she tends to pee and poo all over her hay and then kind of seems uninterested in it. This has not been an issue for my 1 year old male because he seems to have more of an appetite for hay than my girl. 

I’m just interested in finding out what works for you guys and maybe i can get some tips and new ideas for how to put hay in my buns homes. Mind you they live in x pens not cages so some of those hay rack like things don’t seem to hook on my fencing that well.

It wouldn’t hook on our x-pen at a sensible height either, and we were worried about one of them knocking it off and hurting the other, so we drilled holes in it and attached it to one of the panels with cable ties. We also removed the bars from the front. Might as well have made one from scratch after all that customisation! It’s quite small though so I cram loads in there and overflowing out the top.

They still pull loads out onto the floor and refuse to eat it as though it’s somehow tainted…

My hay rack is from the BB store, is peeled willow (edible) and sits on the floor right next to the litter pan. Spike pulled it close one day while in the litter pan so he could munch while in there. He pulls some out to graze, but is fine when I scoop it back in.

I have bent C and C grids hanging up as hay racks, but in all honesty they almost never get used as my bunnies much prefer the hay directly in the litter box so they are able to romp around in it. This does generate a lot of uneaten and trampled on hay, but as I buy my hay mostly in bulk it isn’t a huge issue if a little goes to waste or I have to refill more often.

If what you are doing isn’t working out for your senior girl, there are a bunch of ways you could try. A hay basket in or next to the litter box might work as Pam said, or you could try a hanging hay ball or stuffing hay into a toilet roll tube. I have seen people use enclosed wooden boxes with holes in the front for hay access, or “hay bags” (hanging cloth bags with holes for access.)

arca9 that wooden hay rack looks awesome! Unfortunately Amazon says that they are unable to ship it to the US,  And haha yes my little boy likes to pull clumps of his meadow hay out of his litter box and drag them all around the floor. Silly bunnies!

I use a hay roller hung on my x-oen over his litter tray. He normally pulls loads of it out but seems happy to eat it out of the litter box and out of the hay wheel.
