My bunny Bonnie is 1 yr 10 m old and I got her from the shelter two weeks ago. She’s adjusting great, but the shelter got her unspayed and she has unfortunately stayed that way. They’re really a dog/cat shelter and felt that the risk of anesthetizing a bunny was too much. I have since read (and spoken to two vets) who disagree due to the cancer risk, and I’m much more likely to go with the vet’s opinion. She has been to see a vet near my college and I’ve spoken to a vet near where I live. The one near school quoted me a starting price of $155 to spay her and the one at home quoted $250. My inclination is to go with the vet near school since she owns bunnies and has been doing spaying/neutering quite often, plus she’s cheaper and seemed way nicer. My problem is I only have less than a month of school left. I want to spay her before I go home, but I’m conflicted. She absolutely despises cars and home is about 3 hours and 15 minutes away. I was thinking spaying her right before we go home would keep her sleepy from painkillers and ignorant of the fact that she was in a car, but I’m worried about her stitches and not being able to notice if something is wrong (like her not eating and me not being able to give her Critical Care in a moving car). I’m a brand new bunny owner, and I want whatever is best for her. I don’t know when the best time to spay her is and how to make the car ride easier for her. (Attached is a photo because I can’t resist showing her off. She’s my cute little nugget and I love her to pieces.)

Aw, sweet bun girl. : )

Could you look to getting her spayed once you return for the new school year? Or are you graduating?

Next semester I am going to be a Resident Assistant for the pet friendly floor where other rabbits will be roaming. Though I intend on being very careful about interactions, I do not want, cannot afford, and wouldn’t have the heart to give away an “oops” litter. Plus I’m concerned about the cancer risk since she’s at least a year past when she should have been spayed. I’m going to call up the vet tomorrow and see what her take on it is.

Alrighty, she’s going in on Thursday and I could not be more nervous. She’s really quite old to be spayed and I know that chances are everything will be fine, but even still. I can’t wait for Thursday to come and go and to have her back with me.

I don’t think she’s too old to be spayed at all. She is quite young. Also, there are rabbits who are 4 years+ who need emergency spays and many recover successfully.

That is actually a really good age to get her spayed at. mine was 1 year and 5 months I believe and she came out really good. I hope your bun does good with the surgery!

The female we have, Pumpkin, got spayed about two months ago. She’s 5 and a few months old. She recovered extremely well! The vet said it was a big surprise she didn’t have any cancer or anything like that. Hope her spay goes wonderfully!!

Thanks folks. I’m just a worrier in general and she’s my first bunny (and pet). I’m sure I’ll be a wreck Thursday until I go to pick her up. There’s some critical care in the mail just in case so even that makes me feel a little better.

Bonnie is home from surgery and it went really well. The vet tech told me she was a little “spunky” which sounds just like my girl. So far she’s been very lethargic (which I expected) and she seems to be licking around her wound, but not the incision itself. Is this a problem? I’m trying my hardest not to have to put a cone on her as it’s really not fun for her or my wallet.

I’m also not sure when she needs to be eating by. I have Critical Care for her because she’s not a big eater in the first place, but the vet just told me she needs to have food in her stomach tonight so she can get her pain meds. And the Critical Care instructions are confusing. It says 3 tbs per/kilogram of weight, which would be 9 tbs. I don’t give her that all at one time, do I?

ya you usually do give that to all of them at once. that’s what my vet told me to do. but you should phone your vet and ask exactly just how much to give. Hope she heals well!
