Liebchen, my Holland lop, lives at my parents. I live 5-10 minutes away and visit everyday, cuddling her and taking care of her. Last night (10/21), she was great – hopped around, binkied, cuddled, ate lots of hay and ate her pellets hardily. Apparently sometime this late afternoon/evening (10/22) she started not eating. Didn’t eat her nightly pellets, though she’d eaten hay during the day. Stopped drinking water. My Dad called me, really nervous because she hadn’t been eating much and because she didn’t eat any of the banana he offered her as a snack (she LOVES banana). He said she hadn’t pooped since the morning/early afternoon and she was hunched and grunting at him.
I rushed over as soon as I was done with my shift. Turns out it sounded more like she was WHEEZING than grunting. I’ve never heard her make this noise. I picked her up to give her some Critical Care (she ate happily) and gave her some baby gas drops. She pooped a couple cecatropes when I picked her up but didn’t poop anymore after that and went back to wheezing and looking upset. I looked up snuffles and she doesn’t have any symptoms of that besides wheezing. This was at around 10 pm 10/22, it is nearly 2 am 10/23 and my I called my parents and they said she’s still wheezing.
I’m taking her to the vet in the morning as soon as they open, but that’s over 5 hours away and I’m worried. I can’t afford the emergency vet, the only one around here is a rip off and will charge me $1000 and do nothing but stress her out, handle her roughly, and tell me to go the normal vet in the morning. Does anyone know what it could be? I’m just so worried.

I’m so heartbroken… I had to put Liebchen down today…
The morning of 10/23, she had pooped quite a bit, small poops but I figured she was starting to feel better. She wasn’t wheezing anymore and had a lot of fight in her when I gave her critical care (she still didn’t want to eat). I figured since she was getting better and not wheezing I wouldn’t stress her out by taking her to the vet – I’ve dealt with stasis before and she has always been fine. By 7:00 pm 10/23, she had declined dramatically. She was wheezing again. No more poops. I picked her up to give her critical care and rub her belly – when I touched her belly she SCREAMED and I knew I needed to get her to a vet right that minute. I rushed her to the emergency vet, and she was wheezing but ambulatory. She hopped around the vet room and made about 5 fully formed pellets. The emergency vet gave me baytril and laxatone and some other thing, also gave her sub-q fluids and sent us on our way. Said it was just stasis and didn’t really sound like a lung thing. Said to continue with critical care. I was confident my baby would be feeling better by morning.
This morning Liebchen was not better. She was much worse. No fight left in her, she could barely lift up her head. I rushed her to her regular vet where they put her on oxygen and stabilized her. My poor sweet girl was wheezing so much. They did x-rays and it looked like bloat. Her whole tummy was filled with gas. Her stomach was distended, pushing into her lungs and her lungs were pushed against her heart. There was some fluid in her lungs. The vet tech, who has worked with exotics for 12 years, said this is the worst he’s ever seen in a rabbit. The prognosis was grim, even with intensive care. Both the vet and the vet tech agreed that euthanasia was going to be the kindest option. I had to let my baby go…
