        Hello!

I just noticed, that my bunny has this weird “thing” on her nose, that she didn’t have there before (not sure about yesterday’s evening, but definitely not before then). Not sure what it is – it has hard texture and dark color (look at the photo).

I would go with her to her veterinarian, but she is on vacation ’till Thursday.

Thanks a lot for every response!

Do you think she could have had a tick? Maybe it’s just a scab from her hurting her nose on cage grids etc?

I’d wash it with saline and keep an eye. If it grows or start leaking fluids or if a swelling develops around it (buns are prone to getting abscesses), I’d try to find a vet that can have a look.

Check her over for more scabs esp around the mouth, eyes and reproductive tract (rabbit syphilis can manifest as sores/scabs on those body parts).

I think both options could be possible – when I let her out in the garden she sticks her nose literally everywhere. But I tried looking at it with a magnifying glass and I didn’t see any legs. I inspected her thoroughly and didn’t find any other scabs. Sometimes she gets crazy outside and slips on pavement (it’s quite slippy), so she might have run into a wall. Looks like scab a lot.

Would try the saline, but I don’t know if it wouldn’t irritate her nose?

            Thanks for your advice!

I meant saline like in saline eye wash for humans, 0.09%. You know the stuff used to rinse wounds with. But if the area isn’t dirty and the scab is dry and there’s no swelling I’d just leave it be.

A live tick would’ve grown significantly by now. If a tick dies and the legs/mouthparts are left in the wound you most often just get a bit of local inflammation while the host’s body destroys the tick remnants. If you are in a country where there’s myxomatosis and/or RVHD 1&2, it’s important to get the bun vaccinated, because ticks can spread these diseases. But you probably know that, vaccination awareness is thankfully high in the countries where these diseases are common.
