Whats going on?

This is new…. My bunny is due for desexing, am aware this might be a factor… BUT…

Out of the blue, my bunny has completely changed her behaviour.

I have mentioned before I am waiting for my rabbit savvy vet to return so bunny can be splayed.

However, she has completely changed her behaviour. Barely eating and doing an unbelivable amount of cecos. Doing poops but nothing like her usual amount.

She is obsessively chinning eveything and I mean obsessively. Even her food if I offer hand fed. She chins it and then doesnt eat it. Its really weird.

She does constant circles around me, sometimes dozens and then begs. If I offer her food in response, she doesnt want. Just does more crazy circles.

Once that would have been cute of course but this seems obsessive and really strange.

Could this be her hormones kicking in? She is eight months old.

She won’t sleep in her usual space and just sits and when sees me she comes alive and circles begin. She isnt lethargic, quite the opposite.

This is all totally new and happened pretty much overnight.

Ive read a lot but havent seen anything that explains this.

If she is horny… Why the drop in appetite etc. ?

Watching her poops of course and if that doesnt change will take her to the vet.

Do female bunnys behave like this when they want to mate? She seems to be going nuts for some unexplained reason. Really worried.

Sounds like she is super hormonal. Hopefully your vet can get her in for a spay soon.

That’s hormones alright… She will settle down after a few months but the behavior will never go back to before and there will most likely be some false nesting. Getting her spayed will help immensely and also prevent some of the reproductive cancers bunnies are prone to.

If the change is stressing her it could affect her appetite and if it gets bad enough a vet visit would be a very good idea. Does she have a plushie toy to harass, that sometimes helps.

Thank you Roberta and Jackrabbitt for your replies. I understand all this is most probably hormonal but my MAIN concern right now if the lack of poops. She eats a little but all thats coming out the other end is black poops that look like cecos but they are in with her poops and as for her poops they are very few and tiny.

My post was moved here under behavior and if it wasn’t for the almost zero appetite and lack of poops issue id understand completely. A change in behavior is nothing to be concerned about per se, its this other stuff. Isnt that a health issue? Or can this hormone driven change explain the lack of appetite and dramatic reduction in healthy poops?

*Usually*, smaller darker poops mean not enough hay/fiber, and excess cecals mean too rich of a diet (ex. eating more pellets and less hay). Its possible that she’s so hormonal that she’s eating less hay, but a vet visit wouldn’t hurt. That would give the vet a chance to check for any underlying causes for the appetite/poop changes and give you a chance to discuss getting the spay done.

Taking her to a vet. She has done almost no poops really worth mentioning in the last 24hrs after investigating her litter. Thank you!

I just read your other post Robin. I am so sorry to hear that your little girl has crossed the bridge. Sadly stasis is one of those things you cannot predict and just when it looks fine can take a turn for the worse very quickly. I lost one of mine suddenly and without warning a couple of months ago. I had her from birth so I know how your heart must be breaking. Please don’t be angry with the others the time lines between different regions means that some times there is no one there to answer or they simply do not know what to say.

I am guilty of being a bad BBer robyn, I am so sorry! I didn’t read your post on the other thread, but found out you lost your precious girl – I am devastated for you!
Not that I would have originally posted as I’m sure everyone (including you) knows I usually have no idea – but I used to read everything and was up to date. I missed this completely as I have other threads, there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in my day at the moment. But if I had of known how serious this was, or that she passed I would have made every effort for you, it just didn’t catch my eye. Sorry.
Please know I have both of you in my thoughts robyn, I truly am sorry. Please take care and I hope you don’t mind that I posted ‘after’. But as soon as I heard, I did. Hug’s to you at this very sad time.
