        Hello,

I am a semi-new bunny mama, and as my new bunny is much different then my old bunny, I’m starting to question things again.
So any help anyone can offer would be grand.

Back story:  I had taken in a bunny found outside on Easter last year, he was sick but was able to be treated, but always a bit wobbly.  *1 pound, very quite, kept to himself mostly*  All of the vets I took him too thought he was about 2 years old.  (I had to take him to 4 different vets before I was able to find one who was a bunny vet and knew what was wrong with him.)  He then became a healthy wobbly bunny, who found things very attractive, including my arm.   Because of this, it was decided it was time to get him neutered.  Sadly he did not wake up from the neuter.  We found out that he was MUCH older then he looked, and had some scar tissue from the bacterial infection that we treated him for.

A few weeks later I was called by my aunt, who had a bunny surrendered at the vet she worked at.   He had to lose most of his back paw, and needed a new home.   As such, now have a new bunny.  He is 7 pounds, and Much different from my other bunny.

I had come too understand my little bunny quite well, but I’m worried about understanding this one.

He is very relaxed and dose the ‘dead bunny flop’ a lot and seems to enjoy rolling on his back.   He LOVES to run back and forth up and down the hall, and will follow someone who walks down the hall.   I also fully understand that I have seen him binky a few times now as well.

        But, as his ears hang down, I am having a really hard time ‘reading’ him.   And am having a bit of a hard time understanding his moods because of this.   I will start to pet him, and he seems to back down slightly, *which I would think means he dose not like it* but then looks up at me when I stop, and holds dead still.   Right now he is in ‘bunny loaf’ and just sitting at my feet.  I don’t think I have insulted him, but I’m not quite sure…  >.>;;

He will not even look at me when I call his name, click, or make a noise, but he does not seem to have a hard time hearing.

He has also been over scratching one of his ears the past few days.  When I looked in there was a build up of darker wax right near the opening.  I removed it and he seemed to stop favoring it near as much, but he occasionally still dose, when I look in I only see a small amount of yellow wax deep inside.  Should I be worried?

I have also noticed him making quite a few different noises.  They all seem to be versions of grunts and squeaks, which seems to be normal for them?  If that is the case is there a noise other then the ‘scream’ that I should be worried about when I hear it?  (first bunny was extremely quiet.)
I have also heard him sneeze and he seems to have gotten the hic-ups for a few minutes.  As well as grinding his teeth a bit.  *normal as well?*

I’m also running into the problem that he really enjoys exploring.  I have blocked off areas, and given a bunch of toys, but he seems to just ignore them.   *wicker balls, chew sticks, and 4 other variants of each*   Is there something better I should be giving him?  Should I be looking into getting him something to climb on?  *he seems to enjoy climbing..*

Sorry for the wall of text, Just not sure with how stressed I should be with him right now.

Also, if anybody can give me an ideal what breed he is?
They were guessing a flop and a harliquin *sp*
But I’m not seeing much striping or such on him.

         Thank you for your time.

Definitely a lop. Maybe a French lop? Do you know how old he is? My Lulu is a Holland lop and about once a year she will get an ear infection. The past one was linked to pasturella. I would suggest getting the ears checked. Regarding his noises it’s hard to say. I’ve known some rabbits where it’s normal for them to occasionally sneeze or make an odd squeak. Other times it can be a sign that they aren’t feeling well. Is there any nasal or eye discharge?

Has he had a vet check yet? That ear doesn’t sound normal. He sounds pretty sweet, though
Sorry to hear about your last bunny. What is it with the strays? I had fallen in love w/ a male at the shelter, he was a stray and didn’t survive surgery either. Guess you just don’t know what they’ve been through when they’re on their own for so long. Sounds like your rabbit likes you if he’s hanging out near you. Just enjoy him for who he is…and a few treats wouldn’t hurt in helping him warm up a bit

At 7lbs I would say he’s a mini lop. They are about 5-7lbs on average I think.
His colour/pattern is Agouti. So like wild colouration. You can further confirm this by parting the fur to see if he has bands of colour. You’ll probably see a bluish-grey, light tan and white and possibly dark tips on the fur.

He sounds to me like he’s pretty comfortable in your home. If he’s in a bun loaf at your feet, he’s probably feeling safe and having a snooze. : )
He’s obviously managing well with his disabled back foot also.

Was this surgery done at the clinic where he was surrendered? Perhaps they have notes in his overall health regarding ears and respiratory system??

What type of habitat do you have for him currently. In the habitat galleries here there are examples of condos made out if wire shelving grids (NIC grids). Something like that would allow him to go up and down levels to his hearts content.
You could customize it so to suit any impediment he has.

BunnyLady: They think he is around 8-9months old. We just got back from the vet because of the foot. *he is still in the cone of shame* And nothing seemed odd at the time.
He only seems to have some normal eye gunk that he can’t really clean right now, as he only is allowed a few minutes out of the cone at a time.

We now think with how he ‘grew’ as I fed him, that he was out and about for quite sometime.

                :
Yes he dose seem to have those bands of color. Thank you. ^.^

Yes it was done at the same place he was surrendered. They gave him a check over, and nothing odd is in the notes.

I am in a very small room right now, so its just a section put around a litter box with a carrier and toys.
I will be moving in the next few months, so when I move out, that might be what we will need to make him.

I should also say that his name is ‘Sir Floppity’ for short.  ^.^

That’s a nice setup for him. No doubt he’ll be climbing up on people, the sofa, the beds etc etc. they like being up higher to survey the lands.

Welcome to you and Mr Floppity.

Looking at his face in your avatar I wonder is he has a little English lop in him too? He has that lovely longer face. One of the forum leaders has 3 English lops so I’d be interested in her thoughts.

                        He is so cute!!!

I agree that he looks like a mini lop, but I definitely see where Jersey is saying she see’s a longer face. Rabbit lineage can be very confusing, so this might just be a “one off” thing, or he could be a mix of pretty much any other type of rabbit, likely an uppy eared rabbit.

(I always thought that my mini lop was maybe mixed with an uppy eared rabbit… He had SO MUCH CONTROL over his ears. He would regularly hold one or both straight up for extended lengths of time.)

I’d guess an English/Mini lop cross, more mini but some English in there.

As for understanding him, when he lowers his head, he’s showing submission, saying “I respect you.” Because he looks up when you stop petting him, he’s then saying “I was a good bunny, I wanted to submit. Why did you stop petting me?” He’ll move away when he’s had enough petting.

All four down, head up, looking “What’s going on, where do I want to go? Is that my human I hear over there?”

Standing and looking “Hey, Cool, i think, maybe yikes, What on earth is THAT?”

Dead bunny flop “Ah, it’s nice here, I can relax and get comfortable. I like it here.”

Crouched with nose slightly up. “What can I pounce on? I want to play.”
