What to use as flooring

Hi everyone,

My male rabbit is half Rex, and he’s always been less furry on his heel, as is common with his breed, however when I traveled with him to get his wifebun, he had to stay in an extra large dog cage for most of the time (he normally has a room to himself), and during that time, he lost a ton of his heel hair. I’m not sure why. One day he was fine, the next he was half bald. The skin is white but callused, but I don’t want it to get worse. I’m not quite sure what to do. His room has a brick foyer which he LOVES to sleep on, then a few feet of ceramic, then carpet. I’ve tried putting blankets on the brick or carpet and he refuses to sleep on them. He’ll either move them, or sleep beside it. However, I will be moving in about 5 months to a new house where their room will be wood. I was planning on buying a carpet for them, but then thought that it might not be the best thing since it can cause carpet burn. My other idea would be to sew him a “carpet” but made with bamboo fleece and pul backing. My only concern is that they might rip threw it in seconds. My girl LOVES to dig and chew cloth. So do you guys have any ideas that are soft and chew proof?

A rug should work if they dont like blankets. Rugs would be a little harder for your bun to move. You dont want them on just wood if you can help it

Oh yeah, definitely carpet. Get ’em on Craigslist, like I did! Follow Craigslist safety precautions, of course, but it’s a great resource.

So a carpet is ok? I had read that it’s not great because it can remove their paw fur from carpet burns. (Sorry for the late reply, I forgot to subscribe to the post. I keep thinking it’s automatic.)

Yes the friction from the carpet can also cause sore hocks and remove some fur, but so can only hard surfaces. Your best bet is to have a mixture of surfaces like you currently do, some carpet and some hard. Bandit hated to lie on fleece, but I also made sure I had a soft surface for him should he ever want it. My current pair however spend almost all their time on their fleece blankets and don’t lie down on the bare linoleum.

For sore hocks prone buns I suggest either “Snoozzy Mats” (these are flat soft mats for dog kennels you can get at the pet store) or a nice big memory foam bath mat. As with anything new, monitor for chewing.
