What litter is best for your money?

Hello!

I’m currently using Carefresh and my bun loves it but it’s costing me a fortune!

He’s litter trained and has 3 little boxes.

What do you guys use? I’m in the UK so I’m not sure I’ll have everything you guys in the states might have.

I use pets at home woods pellets. £5.99 for 30kg. I really like them and you don’t have to use a lot. Although I went to get some on Sunday and they are apparently having a supplier issue so I had to buy pampuss instead. It’s usually £10:99 for 30kg but pets at home have reduced it to match their own brand price, I presume to provide an alternative to theirs for the same price until they have stock again. Not sure how good the pampuss is at the mo, only changed their box yesterday but it looks very similar. But I do recommend the pets at home if you can get it. It lasts a long time. As long as your bunny doesn’t attempt to eat it he should be fine with the change

I use compressed pine pellets. It’s about $6 for 40lbs! it does a great job absorbing any urine odors. I find it at farm supply stores, but not sure what you guys have in the UK. I used the carefresh paper at first, but it gets so soaked with pee and I had to change it every day to keep it clean

I am trying to find cheaper and easier litter alternative too. I had been interested in hemp bedding but can not access this in my area. I am wondering about trying Oaten chaff in their litter box, but worry about the dust from it. I have a bonded litter trained pair who may need another box as they have started to go on their hay blankets. Eventually I’d like to deck out that whole corner in litter of some sort but have not the means to do it yet. I currently use compressed wood flaked litter which is really good but very expensive in the long run. I have been trying to order litter in bulk online but no one posts where I live so far. Does anyone have very cheap alternatives that have been successful?

Are you in Australia?  (Your mention of oaten here and “Myxo” in another post leads me to think you are).

Check out if you have Proteq wood pellets stocked in your area. Ive been using them for a while and really like them. I think it’s around $14-16 for a 15kg bag. Sometimes you can get them on special also. It’s sold for horse bedding but is really good for rabbit litter boxes.

If your bun loves Carefresh I bet they’ll love Fitch! The main distributor is in the UK and you buy bulk bales which works out so much cheaper than Carefresh. It’s also softer and less dusty so better all around in my opinion.

It’s £23.99 for a 20kg bale, and that should last quite a while.

Yes I am My lingo always gives me away online. Thanks for the suggestion, that is exactly the sort of stuff I am after. I have checked their website but there is none stocked anywhere near me, but the price is appealing enough to trek to the city for some down the line. I might check out the local stock feed tomorrow if they have any similar products or can order some in for me. Thanks

Floppyhoppy – i use wood pellets too. I use them in a double litter tray so the buns dont sit in their wet wee. The wee trickles down through the top litter box’s holes to the second litter box (no holes !!! Lol) which has the wood pellets in to soak it up.

I’m thinking of that too … it’s not nice to have a bun in it’s pee. But then the pee is stuck to the wire right?

Do compressed wood pellets absorb urine as well as the odour?
