What Kind of Water Should I Give My Bun?

Hi, all. I know there’s a debate over whether rabbits can have chlorinated water or not, but I searched the Internet and cannot get a clear answer one way or another. Inside of my fridge (you fill the fridge up with ice), there’s an ice button and a water button (hopefully someone will know what I’m talking about), and on the outside you can put your cup under there, push the button and out comes the water or the ice, whichever you choose—this is the water that I give to my bunny. I put her bowl up there and push the water button. Of course, this is fine regular, water we all drink this water, in my family. However, I’ve always assumed for some weird reason that because the water is from ice cubes that we fill up inside of the fridge or something that this is filtered water. Now my relative just informed me that just because the water goes through machinery or whatever that it goes through inside of the fridge, that it is in fact not filtered water and is the same thing as giving my bunny tap water, or water directly from the sink. Is it safer to just buy bottled water and give that to my bunny? What are your thoughts?

My bunnies have always just had regular tap water, and as far as I know, there has been no problem with it.

I give my bunnies filtered water from the sink. I have this filter mounted onto my sink and it’s supposed to filter out the tap water. My parents laugh at me for treating them like human beings but I’m too paranoid to give them tap water so it gives me a peace of mind to give them filtered water but that’s just me.

I suppose it depends on the quality of your tap water, but mine have always gotten water from the tap.

Where I live, our tap water is potable, but since it’s desalinated sea water, it doesn’t taste great. So Chewie and I used to drink bottled water (we tried lots of different kinds until we both agreed on Volvic, Isbre, or Fiji, depending on availability). But since Kuwait can get so hot, I always worried about toxins leeching into the water from the plastic bottle, so we ordered a Panasonic water gadget. It attaches to the kitchen tap and runs the water through a few different types of filters. The water tastes amazing and it’s way less expensive than buying bottled (WAY less).

I’ve always fed tap water, no issues at all. Unless your fridge has a built in filter, it’s drawing directly from the mains which means that yes you’re giving tap water.

We just use city water. It it’s safe for people, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be safe for bunnies.

When I lived in town I use to buy the spring drinking water in the gallon jugs at walmart for like 80¢ they liked the spring better than the purified. I didn’t like the idea of them drinking chlorinated city water (I grew up in the country with well water).

I thought most “spring water” was chlorinated due to regulations.

Well, I guess they can use ozone instead of chlorine…

LOL, okay, this got me curious so I looked it up. The FDA allows for up to 4.0 mg/L of chlorine in bottled water. That’s the same as tap water. But not all bottled water has chlorine. It depends on the source of the water and how it’s treated. Ozone can be used to disinfect instead.

I didn’t know that LBJ10! I guess I figured it didn’t since I couldn’t taste it like I can in the tap water. I didn’t like giving them the tap when I lived in town because when I drank it the chemicals made my tongue dry! (A lot of people said that too)
