        Hi Rabbit people,

A friend of mine found this rabbit wandering around his yard. He caught it and kept it in the garage for a couple of weeks. It would go out for a while and come back. He has been away on vacation so it has been living in my sun room. I let it out in the yard (we live in the bush) and it disappears for a while but comes back, sometimes being chased by a local Tom cat. My question is. Is it a domestic rabbit or a friendly wild rabbit?

        Cheers,

        Dave

Hmmm – not sure what the breed is, probably a mix – but looks domestic to me.

The body shape looks domestic, it certainly isn’t any North American wild breed. Not sure where you live, but my guess would be domestic anyway.

Look at that face! I’m going to say domestic.

Thanks for the reply. I live North of Montreal. I sort of thought it was domestic but when he goes out he blends into the Autumn environment so well I keep loosing sight of him. Anyway I’m not really not sure what to do with him. He’s clean and uses a litter box but is a real wall flower. Do they become more sociable over time?

I would keep him indoors now. He kind of looks Netherland Dwarf-y but I’m not an expert. He’s probably nervous.

Yes… Bring the little one in and make it a spoiled rotten house rabbit… You will be very glad you did and it will probably warm up to you very quickly judging by how friendly it already is.

Definitely looks domestic. I would say it’s a lop mix judging by the ear shape and how they are flopping over a bit.

It can take time for them to warm up, especially if they have been outside (and had good reason to be skittish of predators and stuff). Stickers took about two years to stop being such a wall flower, but she’s finally accepting we aren’t about to eat her. Powder took about a day. Keeping him in where he’s safe will probably make it easier to get him more sociable.

Domestic. I’m in NB so I’m assuming you have the same type of wild buns as we do here and they are much more long and lean with much taller ears. He does have a wildish colouring but that colour can be seen in domestics too. He’s cute. I hope you keep him indoors. House buns are the greatest.
