I just bought some nail clippers and some styptic powder.  The container the powder is in is rusted on the side, apparently where a file is.  The powder is almost curry powder color, dark yellow.  I’m annoyed as heck that the file is rusted so now I wonder how old this powder is?  I bought it way too far away to return it right now.  What color should the powder be?

The power is yellow but should not have a rust color to it. I would throw it out (there should be an expiration date). In a pinch you can use some corn starch if you cut too close to the quick (flour too). Hope that helps!

The rust is on the file that is on the outside of the container.  The powder is in a sealed plastic bag inside. No expiration date anywhere.  Do you think it’s ok?

Hmm, O.K. I misunderstood and thought that the powder was in contact with the rust which ate through the can or something. Since it was in a plastic bag, it shouls be just fine. I checked the bottle that I have and there is no expiration date on it. I would move it to another container though, perhaps plastic instead.

Ok thanks.  My nail cutting episode was a complete disaster anyway. I’m going to return that rusty stuff!
