Have you or are you reading anything right now?

I just started V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton – A Kinsey Milhone Mystery whom I love love love!

         Finished:

        The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker – Liked but I was disappointed in the ending, but it was an easy read;

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender – originally bought this because, well, what a great title.  Took me awhile to read it but I really liked it alot – it was another easy read for me.

Been trying to read “Secrets of Lady” by Tracy Grant – may remain a secret for a long time because I’m having trouble wanting to read it.

I think after my Sue Grafton book, I want to read Bill Bryson’s “At Home:  A Short History of Private Life” – I LOVE Bill Bryson – I highly recommend anything he’s written – he’s so entertaining.

         What about you?

         I’ve been watching on Netflix:

The House of Cards Triology – the BBC version – there is a new Netflix version with Kevin Spacey that I will definitely watch soon.  I am almost finished with the BBC one – it’s fun to watch partly because it’s set in 1990 (to 1995) and well, they didn’t have cell phones or personal computers (well they had computers but old DOS stuff).

Also recorded and watched “Enlightened” which I’m sad is being cancelled because I really liked this series.  Next up I’ve recorded “Girls” which I’m anxious to see if I like it.

Also have the first DVD for Dexter which I am anxious to watch – cannot believe I never saw this – good thing for Netflix and DVD’s and instant stream.

Also have like watching Nashville and Modern Family.  Very mainstream but mindless.  Also recorded Portlandia – this is pretty funny – watched it on Netflix and recorded the past season to watch.

Looking forward to the new series of Mad Men!!! Cannot wait – missed this.

        What about you?

Mad Men starts this SUNDAY, Sarita!!!!!! I can’t wait! Out of the blue, I asked Mike today, “Do you think Don and Megan are really going to last?” And he looked at me like I was nuts until I said, “YOU KNOW!!! MAD MEN!!!”

              Watching :

The Walking Dead (though it just did its finale for the season Sunday), Castle and Vampire Diaries. Just started Falling Skies season 1, not bad.

Reading: The rainwild chronicles by Robin Hobb, the next book comes out soon.

I read cook books! HAHA! I’m waiting for my Happy Herbivore cookbook to arrive in the mail.

As for what I am watching – I started season 7 of Bones on Netflix.

I’ve been trying to find a good book to read, but there’s nothing lately that’s interested me, the last thing I read was “Parrotfish” by Ellen Wittlinger. But I read that within two hours, it wasn’t a very big book but I liked it. So lately I’ve been DVRing Pittbulls and Parolees reruns and watching them on the weekends (Because my tv in my room broke, and that’s the only time I can watch tv in my living room) Other than that, I just watch General Hospital, Grimm, and Once Upon a Time with my parents, when they’re on.

Ooo, this reminds me that I want to get back into Mad Men! I watched the first couple seasons and loved it, but when my DVR went on the fritz and didn’t record anything, I missed some episodes and stopped watching (it’s definitely a show where you need to see every episode).

I’m currently reading the complete Sherlock Holmes books/stories. I figure if I have a dog named Watson I should read all of them 🙂

I’m finishing Friday Night Lights on Netflix and not sure what we’ll watch next. We have some movies we want to see, but I like having tv shows since we’re too short on time in the evenings to watch a whole movie.

Psych just started again. I love that show!

I’m reading a non-fiction by Allison Weir “Mary Boleyn- The Mistress of Kings”. It’s really good.

As for shows, I don’t have cable so I have to watch all my shows via internet downloads or Box sets so I’m a bit behind in a lot of shows. I recently discovered “BoardWalk Empire” and I’m in LOVE! “Helloooooooo Jimmy!”  I’m on the Second Season. Bindi is my Boardwalk Buddy.

Also watching: The Borgias, Game of Thrones, and Being Human.

I haven’t been reading much lately, but I’ve watched a few series on and off.
I’ve been watching dexter (love it, have two seasons left I think), vampire diaries, nip/tuck (loved it), and young dracula (lol! actually a kid show, but I love the humor of this series. They only have two seasons on Netflix so I have to get a hold of the rest!). Currently watching weeds.
Other than that, I’ve watched a few documentaries lately on nutrition and animal stuff :3

LPT! The Borgias starts up again on the 14th! That’s another show I love! Mike doesn’t watch that with me, but he does watch Mad Men!

I just finished a book called “Maine”. I don’t recall the author, but it’s a fiction book about a matriarch and her daughter, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law. The four of them narrate and it follows them while they deal with various problems in their lives, how it affects them personally, and the family relationship as a whole. It was a good read, well written.

I haven’t started a new book yet. Not sure what I want to read…

We are still trying to finish Buffy and Angel on Netflix. Been trying to for months. I am looking forward to the premiere of Hannibal tonight.

I had a conversation with two of my first graders at the Y today about The Walking Dead. They told me zombies aren’t scary bc they move too slow so you have to be pretty dumb to get bit by one. I couldn’t help but laugh.

I’m reading “Death’s Acre” which is the story about the Body Farm (a research facility that studies human decomposition to help work out time since death etc), I’ve read it before but it’s really interesting and honestly not as gruesome as it sounds.

The shows I like to watch are NCIS, Elementary and Supernatural… unfortunately down here in Australia they have some issues with playing the new episodes every week so often I watch them online.

We watch some of the other Showtime shows and I just happened to catch one of the first episodes of The Borgias one day and I was hooked. I had to go back and watch the previous episodes on-demand.

I just finished the book The Time in Between by Maria Duenas. It was boring at first but then got really good. It’s about a seamstress in World War Two in Spain. She was left by her husband who took all her money and left her in debt with all these bills. So this really sketchy lady helps her set up a seamstress shop (kind of illegally). And then she makes a friend (one of her clients) who is working as a spy for the English. So it tells the story of how she used the German clients and their wives to infiltrate and give messages back to the English. I liked it quite a bit!

Now I’m on to Les Miserables!

As for what shows I’ve been watching – Game of Thrones is back on! So definitely that! Just read the fifth book this summer and LOVED it. So I pretty much know what the show is about and what’s going to happen but I love watching it anyways! I’m a huge Dexter fan also but I’ve been all caught up on that!

Sarita, how is The House of Cards??? The BF and I plan on watching that as soon as I finish the Star Trek Voyager series. We’re both really excited to watch it!

And Stephanie – BOARDWALK EMPIRE!! I LOVEEEE that show. The end of this season is like “WHAAAATTTTT JUST HAPPENEDDDD!!” Oh gosh, I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that show!

I just finished reading End of Boys by Peter Brown Hoffmeister which is about his difficult adolescence and partially takes place in my hometown. I’ve also been reading the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher.

Favorite TV Shows right now (though I can’t seem to get caught up in any of them)

For anyone that watches Game or Thrones did you read the books or watch the show first? I haven’t seen it yet and I keep getting conflicting advice as to which to start with >.<

@ Foo – I like Buffy and Angel ( I like Joss Whedon in general ) Have you seen Firefly, Dollhouse, and Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog?

Anyone who’s seen Lost, is it worth finishing? I stopped somewhere in the third season.

Sarita- I started watching “Borgia” that’s on Netflix. “The Borgias” is much better.

Tanlover- Yes, I’m totally addicted to Boardwalk! Can’t believe it’s been on for so long and I never knew about it! It’s amazing!

MoveDiagonally- I watched Season 1 of GOT, then read the book and I’m going to stick to that pattern. I’m going to start Book 2 soon. It’s helpful for me to read the book since a lot of minor characters in the show, it’s hard to catch their name and the book gives you more info on the characters. The books are really good.

Elrohwen, I read the Complete Sherlock Holmes from start to finish (weighs about 60 lbs.) when I was 15. Been a SH fan ever since. The series on BBC a few years ago with Jeremy Brett were excellent adaptations. Sherlock, a British modern take on it is fabulous! Elementary, Hollywood’s steal from the success of Sherlock just doesn’t cut it for me at all. The British do Holmes best, though I did love Basil Rathbone movies despite the nazis in them.

Mum and I have been binging on British mystery TV shows for months, and we finished watching The Last Detective (loved!) and George Gently (also loved.). We are still watching Midsomer Murders, which have 13 years worth so we haven’t run out yet.
Also love David Suchet as Agatha Christie’s Poirot.

Latest book was Jonathan Kellerman’s latest book. Scary. His crime dramas are so gruesome and real, but his 2 buddy detectives are too good to stop.
I also finished every book written by Louise Penny, read in order. Excellent writer!!!! Her characters grow in sequence, and her books take place in Quebec, so is sprinkled with French. Eagerly awaiting new book.
Previously recommended: “The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane”, by Katherine Howe, for those who like Salem, MA and its history, with a modern plot interwoven. Her first novel and very good.

I know it is you g adult fiction, but I couldn’t recommend the book “The Fault In Our Stars” by John Green. I could comfortably say that it is the best book I have ever read. It is beautiful and makes me cry SO MUCH!

Also, I’ve been watching the show Doctor Who since I was two, but the new series Is soooooo good. I’m really addicted. Also, I’ve been watching this show called “Too Cute”, and I’ve become obsessed. There was an episode that followed the adorable childhood of a litter of baby mini lops, hedgehogs and Vietnamese potbelly pigs. I started crying, the were SO cute!

                                                      So yeah.

Over spring break I finally had some time on my hands, so I read “Bright’s Passage” by Josh Ritter (who is one of my favorite singer/songwriters) and “The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay. Both fantastic books!

As for TV, I usually follow Parks and Recreation, Community, Elementary, Game of Thrones, and Doctor Who. I’m so excited that the last two are back on!! For Game of Thrones, can’t wait to see how they bring out Jojen/Meera/Coldhands.

Anyone looking forward to Arrested Development on Netflix?

I love Arrested Development! And I heard Kristen Wiig is gonna be on it, and I love her too.

MO- I’ve seen all three. Firefly was good, I didn’t really get into Dollhouse and I LOVED Dr. Horrible (yay Neil Patrick Harris!!). =) Makes me soo happy someone else has seen this.

We just watched the premiere of Hannibal and both liked that. Saw Evil Dead last night. It was okay, overly gore filled. Like I seriously felt like every five seconds someone was losing a body part. I did like seeing the girl from Subugartory in something else though.

I’ve been reading a lot about integrated behavior couples therapy for a paper I have to write before the end of the semester. Can’t wait for summer so I can read fun things like actual books again. I started reading a Nicolas Sparks book awhile ago, The Lucky One, and would very much like to finish it.

I just discovered a hilarious series, but it’s actually an old series from the BBC.  Called “The IT crowd”   About the offbeat socially awkward, unintentionally menacing misfits of a company’s IT department.  I love it.  It hits my funny bone in a serious way!

I am just starting a book (as if I have any time to read it!) called “Living by the Code” :  A true story about a German pilot in WWII saving an American B-17 crew and how the German Pilot and the B-17 Pilot became friends many many many years later.  I dont’ have all of the details as I am just beginning this book.  My brother and father are reading it too at the same time so it will be fun to talk about, and force me to slow down a take time to read.   It’s hard to find things that really interest my dad now as he is 88 and has some cognitive issues, but he can still enjoy a good book, so that’s something amazing!  Also, my father was a ball turret gunner on B-17 and B-24s in WWII. (He just turned 18 when he volunteered for the draft– hadn’t even gotten drafted yet!).   So this story definitely will be a good way to connect.  I always loved hearing his WWII stories and so it will be great to discuss others, which will also cause him to bring up some great gems of his own.

It’s sort of strange having a father, not grandfather,  with these experiences!  I’m no young spring chicken, but he had me in his 40’s.  Having an older father definitely allowed for a lot of wisdom to be passed down to me.

That sounds interesting, BB. I don’t normally read war-related books, too much Tudor/medieval books to read but I love all types of history, including the WWs. It’s hard not to be fascinated with it. I’ve recently started watching WWII- In Living Colour on Netflix. Very interesting.

That’s neat that you were able to hear war stories from your Dad. I don’t have any close relatives that were in the war. My great grampy, whom I never met, was head of Cavalry in the UK in the first World War. I find that interesting since he’s the only one in my family whom I know of that was interested in horses. Guess I take after him.

I’ve watched 5 seasons of Gossip Girls, all episodes of Larkrise to Candleford, 1 season of The Killing and of course, House of Cards, the second season of which I’m really impatient for.

The Following def isn’t as good as I hoped. I had thought it would be right up my alley and was disappointed. I can’t wait for the next episode of Hannibal, I really liked the books and the movies (although I am the annoying person who points out the differences between the two).
