I am currently reading “The Swan Thieves” by Elena Kostova. So far, I’m enjoying it. I loved her book “The Historian” – I can highly recommend that.
What are you reading?
House of leaves by mark z. Danielewski. It’s a slow read but I really enjoy the book. Almost done with it
I just finished listening to One Summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson. I think Bryson is great at telling a story while teaching you about some very interesting events. He also narrates his own books and does it well. 1927 isn’t really a year you hear much about – between the wars, before the Great Depression, Calvin Coolidge was president, etc. – but some fascinating things happened that year.
Also, anyone familiar with “The Discworld Series” by Terry Pratchett? One of my favorite bloggers – Leo Babauta “Zenhabits” – recommended these on his reading lists.
I just looked up “House of Leaves” and that sounds really good – wish it was on Nook though.
Love love love Bill Bryson – I have that book on my shelf ready to read one of these days too.
I’m reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. I always have to be reading at least two books for different moods! Enjoying both of them a lot.
NBO123 – How is House of Leaves treating you? You must be thrilled to be near the end. Any nightmares?
Just finished “The Husband’s Secret” by Lianne Moriarty. Great book, quick read. Lots of twists…
Going to be starting the new Stephen King tomorrow… “Doctor Sleep”. The main character is Danny Torrance from “The Shining”, but HE’S AN ADULT NOW!
🙂
Im going classic and am reading “Emma” by Jane Austen. I have a friend who studied Jane Austen at university and she is always after me to read her work. I’m enjoying it but its hard to get used to a book written in early 1800. Wanna read ” Pride & Prejudice” too.
I’m reading Trinity by Leon Uris for my book club. It’s historical fiction about Ireland during the revolution in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, specifically around Belfast. It’s really good!
LPT, let us know what you think! I’m a huge Austen fan. I know most people like P&P the best, but I think Emma is my favorite. I love that Emma is a more complex character than a lot of Austen’s women. The new-ish adaptation of Emma by the BBC (with Romola Garai) was really good, and of course the Colin Firth version of P&P is excellent, if you’re interested in movie versions.
I really liked Sense and Sensibility, but then, it was also a movie full of favorite British stars.
I got the Time Traveler’s Wife from the library, but with a lot going on this month I still haven’t started it. I saw the movie, and heard somewhere (here??) that the book was good and possibly better than the film.
Just finished “Lets Explore Diabetes with Owls” by David Sedaris. Meh it was okay I thought, at least it was a quick read.
RP: Time Travelers Wife book is muchhhh better than the movie. If you end up liking the writing style, the author has another book called “My Fearful Symmetry” that I really enjoyed as well.
I’m actually in a Jane Austen book club
We’re on “Persuasion” right now, it was hard to get into (which I find with most of Austen’s work), but it’s getting much better. Just have “Emma” left which I’m eager for because I saw the Gwynneth Paltrow version of the movie and hated it, so I want to see what it’s really like.
Lots of Austen fans here! I’m about half way done “Emma” so I will let you know how I feel when it’s done. I’m a very fast reader but this book is slower going, I find I really have to take more time because of the language and different style of writing.
JustWildBeat – I read a couple of his older books and enjoyed them. I’ve been wondering if “Lets Explore Diabetes with Owls” is worth buying. Did you not like it in comparison with his other works or just not your style in general?
I’ve just started on Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects. I read Gone Girl and Dark Places this summer, and I loved both of them, especially Dark Places.
I’ve been reading Walden and I just started Lincolns Melancholy – I’m reading both for my psychology class. Walden I probably never would have read on my own (although it’s good so far!) but the Lincoln book is fabulous! I’ve really enjoyed reading it. I’m only 1/4 of the way through though.
RabbitPam: I loved Time Traveler’s Wife. I agree the book was better – but still enjoyed the movie
Beka: I just finished Husband’s Secret as well…
Recently finished the Divergent Trilogy. Really enjoyed this series – and I’m looking forward to the movie which is supposed to come out early 2014?
Almost done with Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story. This is a book about Joni Eareckson Tada and her husband Ken Tada and their marriage. She’s a well known Christian author, speaker, painter who is a quadriplegic. I cannot imagine the struggles of marrying a quadriplegic – that is totally selfless and sacrificial love. Wish my heart was that big.

I love this book! I get what you mean about a slow read though. I read it 10 years ago for the first time and it was a struggle until I reached the two thirds mark. I have read it 3 more times over the years and always pick up on something that I never noticed before ![]()
Currently, I am reading Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth and Carol Tonkinson’s Big Sky Mind: Buddhism and the beat generation. I tend to read multiple books at a time, haha. Blame it on ADD (jk- maybe, I have never been assessed! It would explain a lot though!
)
*This might be why I like Danielewski’s book so much, considering there are two interrelated stories going at one time. One in the foreground and one in the margins. I don’t know if you are aware of a neat fact about the book. The author is the brother of the singer Poe and she actually made an album that was meant to be played while you are reading the book! How cool is that?! I tried it and it definitely added to the ambiance of the story. Sorry, I can’t remember the name of the album as I don’t have it any more, but if you google it you’re sure to find something ![]()

I am an avid Stephen King reader! Can’t wait to dive into this one ![]()
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Austen.
I read Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry too and enjoyed both as well. Gillian Flynn is amazing. I just started Divergent and I am hooked! I loved Hunger Games so this has a similar feel but is based in Chicago which I like being from IL. I love reading! I wish there were more hours in the day! I’m excited to check out all the new book suggestions. Thanks guys! ![]()
Moxie – That is so interesting about the album to be listened to while reading House of Leaves! I’m definitely looking into it, I was thinking I should go a re-read of that book this summer ![]()
It’s Haunted by Poe is what is advised to listen to while reading the book if you were wanting to do that, Rufus
correct me if I’m wrong… But I’m pretty sure that’s what it is.

I just read Dark Places for my book club and it was ok – not my favorite book, but definitely thrilling and it kept me reading. Most people in the club had already read Gone Girl and said they loved it, but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.
Has anyone read The Language of Flowers? We’re reading that in January.
And for Emma readers, I really recommend the BBC version of the movie with Romola Garai. I like Gwyneth Paltrow as an actress, but didn’t like the movie version of Emma much when I watched it again recently.
Thanks NBO123!
On Austen, I’m generally a big fan, but has anyone read Mansfield Park? I think that might be the most excruciating book of all time! Fanny Price, the main character is just so insipid. Love the other books though.
I just realized that I just finished the Husband’s Secret also! It was good but not exceptional.

That’s it! I could not for the life of me remember the name of the album haha. It really lives up to the name too! I vividly remember reading a part of the book (in the Navidson Record) where they are exploring the five and half minute hallway and listening to the album. I was alone in my apartment and became so freaked out that I had to shut the book and make a calming cup of chamomile
. Here is a link to a neat web page that discusses the book and it’s sometimes hidden meanings. Check it out after you read the book as there are spoilers! http://markzdanielewski.info/features/guide/

I generally love Austen as well (Pride and Prejudice is a favorite of mine), but have to agree with you about Mansfield Park! I tend to finish a book regardless of how I feel about it if I can make it to the half way mark. Some books are just slow to progress as they set the stage so to speak. This one however, I had to put down. I just could not ‘get into’ the story. ![]()

Totally agree, I could not stand Mansfield Park. I started it years ago, gave up, and only just finished it last month. I don’t know if I can call myself an Austen fan… I love Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility, but I don’t really care for her other works. I’m much more of a Charlotte & Emily Bronte fan.
