What can I do for mites until vet?

I noticed mite like dandruff and scabs on Bombur and Asriel about a week and a half ago. The vet is unable to see them until the 23rd. Asriel’s flaking parts are finally coming loose and with it so is some fur. Bombur on the other hand, seems to be getting these really raw cuts. It looks so painful. I’ve attached some photos. Is there anything I can do until Saturday? I feel so bad that they’ve been like this for 2 weeks almost. I want to help them but I don’t want to hurt them. Please help.

Revolution for puppies and kittens – your bunnies are about same size as mine so one tube each

Just don’t use frontline – it’s not safe at all for bunnies. Revolution is only one I use as I know it’s safe.

Great! Do you know where I could get that? Petco or Petsmart? Should I also still take them to the vet after using it? I know the vet said they’ll probably be given injections of Ivermectin.

Are you in the US? You can’t buy Revolution over the counter in the US. But I’m surprised the vet wouldn’t just let you buy it from them since you are a client. Most vets will allow you to walk in and ask for it at the front desk. If your pet sees the vet there, then they usually just confirm that to be the case and then sell you what you need. People use Revolution for dogs and cats as well, so that’s usually the more common scenario (i.e. “Can I buy some flea medication for my dog?”).

LBJ: I am in the US. I’m in Boston, so I go to the MSPCA animal hospital and it’s so expensive to go for a visit, plus the medication ? I guess it’s good if they go anyways. They both need nail trims and will only let the vet do that ?

They don’t sell flea medications at the front desk? You don’t need an appointment at my vet’s office for that. Like I said, people buy flea and tick medication for their dogs and cats all the time. It’s silly to make an appointment for just that. But maybe it’s different in different states?

At least where I am they want you to make an appointment because the pharmacy will only fill prescriptions authorized by the vet. They won’t just give anything over the counter. When Bombur needed critical care I had to see the vet for that too. It’s quite a pain.

The only thing you can do is brush them to get as much of the flakes out, it gets rid of some om the mites too. It’s said to be relieving for the bunnies. Do it in the bathroom or outside, because mites (or rather the eggs I think) can survive a long time in the environment. A bathroom can be cleaned with bleach relatively easily, take out towels etc before you start brushing.

And if a bunny get sores, do put on some triple antibiotic cream, to avoid any secondary bacterial infection. mites causes itching in some buns (not all) and a bun that’s scratching itself will transfer bacteria and dirt from their feet to the itchy area.

To be candid, I think I’d start looking for another rabbit-savvy vet if you’re having that much trouble with the MSPCA hospital. Check with the Massachusetts HRS and any local rabbit rescues, there should be vets who won’t give you hassles about buying flea medications and such and are cheaper to boot.

Joea64: my vet is amazing and my buns love her, so it’s hard for me to just leave cause of this one snaffu. When Bombur’s neuter was infected she felt so bad that I had to spend $85 on an uber because I was so worried that she didn’t charge for the visit, just the $20 for the sulfatrim

If you get Revolution, you can do normal cleaning. You do the treatment in two or three rounds, with like 2 weeks between rounds. This is because the Revolution doesn’t kill all stages of mites, but in two weeks, those that were eggs will have hatched and be killed by the next round of treatment. If the infestation is bad, you can do a third round. Revolution is normally very effective against all types of mites. My Bam had mites when I first got him, I did two rounds of treatment and normal cleaning of the apt. Washed everything washable, put toys in the freezer for 48 hours, ran all bowls and bottles etc in the dish washer. This was almost 6 years ago and we havent had any mites since.

Thanks Bam! I brushed Asriel and those hard flakes came off easily, and he even got fussy when I stopped. There area doesn’t look too bad now that the flakes are gone, just a little pink. The flakes were almost crust like, and the only way they came off was when I brushed him. The area isn’t large either, just a dime sized area between his shoulders.
I put some Neosporin (without pain relief) on Bombur’s raw cut area, and brushed him a bit too. Bombur doesn’t have any of the crusty skin or dandruff either.
I’ll go to the vet tomorrow and see if I can get some Revolution for them without needing to see the vet first. God knows I’d rather spend $40 over $100, but anything for my boys ?

And the pharmacist wants to check with the vet first. I have the feeling I’m going to end up having to take them in. She’s super thorough and always wants to make sure they’re ok, which is nice, but right now it’s frustrating.

Just popping in to see if other members weigh in on this. I have read that putting a few drops of teatree oil or vegetable oil can suffocate the organism causing it? Just wondering if anyone knows anything about that home remedy? Obviously it’s best to treat with medication intended but I wonder if that could help keep it under control until the vet? I’m not suggesting that you do this, just wanted to see what others know about that!!

I have tea tree oil too, so that would be nice.
The pharmacist said the vet wants to see them because of breed and weight and wanting to make sure she gives them the right dose. So ?I mainly feel bad for Bombur. He’s got a nasty little open area. It doesn’t seem to bother him, but it looks so bad.

Tea tree oil is really strong, so I’d rather use plain mineral oil if I had to. It could suffocate the mites, it’s what you do with baby kittens that have mites but are too young to have chemicals on them. If you do decide to use tea tree oil, dilute it well. Like one drop TTO to 5 ml plain neutral oil. I’ve never used TTO on anyone but myself, they say it’s toxic to dogs – but then people say all sorts of things. I can’t find anything conclusive about use on rabbits.

You need kitten strenght of Revolution, Revolution for kittens under 5 lbs. But it’s good if a vet takes a peek at Bombur’s open area, because he might need oral antibiotics or an anti-fungal.

Bombur’s open area is now like a pink area. I’ve used Neosporin the past two days, and it looks like it’s clearing up. Asriel’s flakes are gone and now its just slightly pink. it’s almost like the past two weeks didn’t happen for both of them. I can’t find any more evidence of flaking or “dirt like” specs on either of them. it’s so weird. Should I still take them in? Could it have been from moulting?

This is the second time finding something like this on Bombur ? The first one cleared up in a few days with Neosporin. What does it look like? My poor baby… 2 more days until the vet.

You’d have to dip your bun in oil to have it work. lol

Plus teatree oil can actually cause skin irritations in some people and buns have even more fragile sensitive skin than hoomins.

It just looks like a small sore. Has he been scratching himself? Has Asriel been over-grooming him? Put neosporin on this one too. 2 days isn’t long.

They didn’t have any mites but they did have eggs present. They were given a dose of revolution and have to go back in another month for a second dose. Bombur was also given special cream for his sores. They’re also 4.7 pounds, which is crazy
