Well behaved unneutered rabbit. How!?

We thought the pet shop said he’d been neutered but it turns out they gave us a voucher instead. We didn’t realise until we booked his boarding for Christmas. We’re on our way to get his vaccinations just now.

He’s 3-years-old, toilet trained, doesn’t chew absolutely everything, isn’t territorial and doesn’t spray.

As far as I can tell, he’s behaving like a neutered rabbit even though he isn’t. Is this just and age thing? And is his behaviour likely to change when we get him done this week?

Not all unaltered bunnies exhibit the undesirable behaviors associated with being hormonal. There are a few unaltered bunnies that use their litter box, don’t spray, or chew excessively. So consider yourself lucky! The general recommendation is to neuter your bunny. This is mostly because boy bunnies can be crazed with hormones leading to destructive behaviors and sexual frustration. Plus you can’t bond two bunnies without having all parties spayed/neutered. But if you have a single boy bun and their behavior isn’t a problem, then it isn’t as important to have them neutered. There isn’t the same risk of reproductive cancer as there is in girls.

If you have the voucher to have him neutered, you might as well go ahead anyway. I mean, it won’t cost you anything. You probably won’t notice much difference in his behavior. But you would already have him done just in case you decide later that he needs a friend.

We’re definitely going to get him done. He’s booked in for next Tuesday, although we did have a small disagreement with the shop we adopted him from as they’re claiming they don’t have neutering vouchers but concede that maybe they just haven’t been delivered as they’ve only recently opened the branch and are missing vouchers for other things. 

It’s listed on our paperwork and we got his vaccinations and check up today, so they said that hopefully it should be enough.

We’re undecided about getting him a friend. We haven’t got room for two cages as we live in a studio apartment but I’m hoping that a friend will be possible when we move somewhere bigger after I’m done with uni. My wife thinks it would be a lot of hassle (if he doesn’t like the other bunny) and that he won’t want a friend after this long. We’ll see.

We are very lucky to have him. It’s unbelievable to think that the staff reckoned we could think about it for a while because the way it was going, no-one would take him in the interim period.  

One of the other bunnies up for adoption has been there ages and as he’s unhandled seems unlikely to get a home. We feel sorry for him every time we go.

Unhanded does not mean the other bunny is not a good pet. My best bunny spent most of his life in a cage until I got him.
As far as getting your bunny a friend rabbit shelters sometimes will let you bring your rabbit in to let him pick a friend he wants.
It can be easier having 2…like kids 2 play together and can be less trouble than 1. I said can be…it depends on the bunny or the kid.
