Welcome Louie! (and seriously?!)

First,

We brought our rescue pup Louie home this past Saturday! He is 12 weeks old and pretty amazing. (and I am NOT a puppy person so that is saying a lot haha!)

Ok, now for the yucky stuff. As rescue pups go (and puppies in general for that matter) Louie has Giardia (which we were not aware of when we adopted him as this rescue doesn’t do a fecal exam, they just automatically de-worm.)

 So we have him on the proper meds and we have been diligent about washing our hands and washing his feet and bum when he comes inside. I am afraid though that AL could catch it and it would be a much bigger deal if he did.

 

Should we limit our interactions with him until Louie is better? I would hate to expose him to it unknowingly.  Can it stay on clothing? Obviously Louie is a puppy and still a bit mouthy so he tries to chew on clothes. Anyone have experience with this?

 

We ended up moving AL back downstairs as we were afraid he would be scared and also that Louie would be too distracted to pay attention to any training.  I used his two playpens, connected them to his other hug pen, and secured them around the sides of the couch. So now, when we are home, he has a HUGE area to jump and play and we can be with him since he loves the couch so much. Thank God he is not a chewer. We just close off the extension when we are not home as he likes to think he can catapult himself over the back of the couch!

 

Any guidance would be awesome! We have never had to deal with any of this before.Thanks!!

What a cutie!!!

I have to try and read up a little about giardia and rabbits before I can say anything about that. Great that he’s on the proper meds. He looks like the sweetest boy!

Back when I did rescue I had a couple squirrels that had giardia. (among other things)

It usually infects animals/humans through contaminated water, direct contact, uncooked produce. In their inactive state, I can’t recall what it’s called, I believe they can live outside their host for several months. There are several species, many that can use both humans and other mammals as hosts, some are more specific.

Keep the area clean, if the puppy is using the restroom in your yard I would pick up any poops and dispose of them, so no one tracks in anything on their shoes. After handling the puppy wash your hands, especially when handling food items for your family or other animals. It’s shed through feces. If it were me I’d probably keep him from having access to hard to clean areas of the house, such as carpets and keep him from having direct contact with any other animals or small children who may accidentally stick their hands in their mouths before washing.

I was running a ferret rescue at the time and no humans or animals were infected other than the squirrels that had it. I have no idea what species of giardia it was or whether it could of passed to the rest of us, but we just used the same precautions as if it were.

Oh I just noticed it was last saturday that you got him, if he’s been on meds since then, he’s probably pretty safe. 7 days on meds is usually good. Though a little quarantine of any new animals is always good plan the first few weeks.

I have no imformation to share regarding buns and Giardia.

But he is ADORABLE! Does he have any terrier in him? And I think I have that same harness for one of our rescue pups, Paris. (Paris ate all our other harness’ in like 20 seconds so now we need to buy new ones T.T)

Ok thanks! Yes, we’ve been confining him to the kitchen eating area (we don’t eat there and took all the furniture out) since we got him. We plan to keep him confined at least for a few months until he is neutered and trained. He can’t get Neutered until Dec. That is when the rescue has scheduled it anyway so he’ll be in the kitchen for the foreseeable future.

He just got on meds yesterday since he went for his first vet visit on Tuesday. He hasn’t had access to any other part of the house but we weren’t being too careful with washing up after playing with him before yesterday as we didn’t know anything was going on. sigh.

He is pretty stinkin adorable though! He HAS to sit in your lap to chew on a toy. Last night my hubby and I were sitting on the floor with him and he kept switching laps. It was so funny! Even if we are playing fetch, he will retrieve the toy and come sit on your lap. ALWAYS. ha! If we leave the room he will go to his bed but if we are in there he must be on us at all times. (not that we are complaining. We love to cuddle with him)

He is lab/terrier mix. At least that is what the rescue thinks. He has more terrier in his face compared to some of his litter mates but he is eager to please like typical labs. We love his scruffy old man face !
