I got my rabbit spayed on 6/3/11 at the local rabbit savvy vet and they charged us $152.94 which we paid at the office when we picked her up. They said everything else was included in the bill.

On 6/30 apparently they printed us a bill for $12 for the metacam they prescribed. We check our mail every week or week and a half or so and today when we got the mail we had that bill in our box.

So 27 days after the spay, they printed us a bill for something they said was included and did not charge us for in office. I’m going to pay it because it’s the only rabbit savvy vet in town, but um, should I mention the fact we weren’t charged until 27 days AFTER the actual medication was given out and were quoted a price different than what ended up being the case?

For the billing – they may not close out their books until the end of the month or at certain times, so this is not unusual.

I would mention however that you were quoted a different price and understood the procedure and meds were all inclusive in the price.

I just find it unusual that they printed off our bill at the office when we picked her + the meds up and didn’t include the medication, if they were charging us for them, especially since we asked specifically what the extra charge was since we requested a second dose of metacam for her. My animals have been going to vets for 15+ years and first time I have ever gotten a bill in the mail, since we always ask what all we owe and pay before we leave.

It is possible that their system did not update the second dose that you asked for when you picked her up. I know with my vet’s system that someone enters the invoice for checkout other than the receptionist and sometimes when I come in and it’s not invoiced I have to wait. Not trying to make excuses for your vet and their billing system but that has been my experience with my vet’s system. I guess that’s why I don’t find it terribly unusual. The new vet systems that are computerized seem very different to me too…probably better for the vets but it’s not what I am used too in the past.

Maybe call them and ask about it

I would call them and ask, but I know in my clinic what happens occasionally is that the receptionists will bill someone out not knowing that the vet or tech hasn’t put everything on there. When that happens though we always call them and then put a reminder note in the bill we mail.

Just call but be friendly about it.

I would call and ask why you received the bill when you were you told everything was included? Be polite. As a courtesy, they might just forgive your balance. It is $12 after all. But if not, i would definitely pay it. You don’t want to ruin your relationship with what sounds like a very good vet over… $12.

It has happened to me a few times, i asked for second does or an extra tube of something and then a few weeks later I get a bill for the “extra” that I requested as it did not make it onto the first bill. So now i check the bills before I leave.
