I took my mini lop to the vet yesterday for a vaccine and he weighed 0.51 kg (1.12 pounds). Now suddenly today he weighs 0.48 kg (1.06 pounds). He hasn’t been drinking much water like usual and he just lost his brother the day before the vaccine. They were quite close. He still eats some food but he didn’t eat his soft poo from last night. He was a little warm and lethargic today but he seems to have cooled down a little. Is this normal to fluctuate in weight? He is 10-11 weeks old.

How old is he? 0.51kg is very small for a mini lop.

It’s hard to know what a usual fluctuation in weight is, but I wouldn’t think 0.03kg would be something to worry about.

I’m sorry about the loss of your other bunny. Bunnies can get depressed after the loss of a friend, so it is important to make sure he is eating his usual amount, and continues to poop. If he’s a young rabbit, sometimes they make extra soft poop and don’t always eat it all.

If he stops eating or pooping then he will need to go back to the vet.

Thank you, it is very sad. I’m worried about him as his brother passed away at the vet, not in the cage.. so i’m not sure if the other bunny is catching on yet..I think he knows something is wrong because he does seem quite sad.

He is around 10-11 weeks old. His brother was bigger than him as well. Not sure if he’s just a small bunny. Do you think the vaccine also just made him feel unwell today? I will keep an eye on his eating habits.

A little fluctuation is fairly normal. It’s also pretty normal for them to be a bit ‘off’ after a vaccine. Do keep an eye on it though in case he eats less and less and becomes depressed. So sorry to hear about your other bun

sirius, I think UK mini lops are bigger than others, and in some countries Holland lops are bigger than mini lops. It’s a bit confusing but that might be why Bunnyph’s lop seems small compared to ours

It’s not unusual for rabbits to be a bit subdued after a vaccination. Make sure he keeps warm, and is still eating and drinking.

Younger rabbits tend to adapt better to the loss of a friend so I’m hopeful that it shouldn’t effect him too badly.
