we had a visitor this morning

We had a young moose visit this morning. She’s been hanging out in our neighborhood a lot lately and is still very young and skittish, so we have to be very careful and give her lots of room.

Oh, she so cute! No moose where I live but I love to see the wildlife.

I love living up here. We regularly get moose and black bears in our neighborhood. My husband saw a fox this morning. We see all kinds of critters when we go hiking. I feel kinda bad that I can’t just toss my daughter out to play and explore on her own, though, and it’s a little disconcerting that I can’t walk down to check the mail (about a block away) without carrying bear spray, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Not anymore because of development (sad face) – but even 5 years back I used to get kangaroo’s in my front yard. Loved it!

Mossling — what is bear spray and how do you use it?
Even the thought of a moose outside would send my big scaredy dog behind the sofa for weeks! We get hot air balloons flying over our house frequently and even they send her tucking tail and hiding!

AH – I realize that kangaroos to you guys is kinda like deer to me, but KANGAROOS!!! I would be like a kid at Christmas!

LOL JR I see Roo’s every day… The large lawn cemetery down the road has a huge community that takes care of any roses left in tribute. (They are like bunnies that way) The chicken pellet (formerly a hatchery) in the other direction also have a green corridor surrounding them due to health requirements demanding a half kilometer barrier between their property and housing so they have Roo’s living there too… Mind you this is a suburban area, use to be vineyards and market gardens but has been built up very quickly… It’s the snakes from my proximity to Lake Joondalup I am not overly keen on.

I am SO jealous Roberta! I took ‘my’ (ha ha ha) kangaroo’s for granted thinking they would always be around, but na! Across the road finally got built on. Even the family, dad (HUGE), mum and bub located and living happily about 2 minutes down the road in the bush across from the shops eventually disappeared (super sad face). So I’d say if I ever want to see a kangaroo again, I’ll have to ‘pay’ and go to a zoo! (or I can come and visit you! Lol!).

Yer JR, they used to come onto my front lawn to eat my new turf (bugga!), but I didn’t mind – I loved sitting outside at dusk with a glass of wine while dinner was cooking and just admire them thinking how lucky I was. Once I even picked my daughter up from work half and hour late cause they were right up near where I sat – I couldn’t believe they got so close? But after doing it night after night, I’m sure they got used to me and I never ever tried to approach them. When I finally got into the car to pick her up, they still didn’t move and were there when we got home. Yep! I was just like a kid at Chrissy! Lol….
A deer! Oh dear, I’d love that tooooo! Except for snakes (I’m with you Roberta) I love seeing wildlife in my own yard!

I live in a very populated area so we basicly get squirrels and birs but we have a family of cardinals and we used to have (yup thats right) SNAKES! Haha we found where they live and they had babies. So for a while we had a bunch of baby snakes running around. We also saw a wild turkey in our yard once. Gotta love animals!

Oh my goodness, kangaroos! I’d love to visit Australia some day! It makes me so sad when development chases critters out of their home.

JackRabbit, bear spray is like extra strength pepper spray. We carry it on base (where we can’t carry weapons) and on day hikes where the likelihood of a bear encounter is low. We take our shotgun, too, on multi-day hikes or in areas with lots of bear activity. *knock on wood* we haven’t needed either yet.

I assume you aim for the face with the spray. Wouldn’t it just make the bear mad? We have bears here, but not anywhere I plan to go near!

Can’t stand snakes. The ones we get near our house are mainly black snakes and my husband takes care of relocating them without telling me he found one. We get toads around our house in the Summer (hubby catches bugs and feeds them to the toads so we can watch their tongues grab the bugs — cheap entertainment!). If the toads start disappearing, hubby know to quietly go on snake patrol.

Wow, great pic!!! I find moose a strange mix of beautiful and funny looking! We have lots of moose in our area too, well not exactly in my area, since I live in the City but right outside the City there are tons and driving on the highway in the Fall can be very dangerous. Big black bear population as well. My sister is lucky, she has her house right in the woods and gets to see these animals very frequently.
