satuday morning i had plans to goto the library again and study all day… big exam this wed aft.  i woke up at 9am to discover – before i had a chance to grab a drink of water or use the bathroom – that bogart (dog) had eaten an entire poinsettia plant.  panick.

so i called my vet who wasn’t sure of the toxicity level of the amount he ingested and recommended that i call the emerg vet hotline for advice.  the emerg vet hotline also wasn’t sure and gave me the option to either call poison control for a definitive answer OR bring him in so they could induce vomiting.  i opted to call poison control which turned out to be the best choice since they said definitely i need to induce vomiting.  and the quicker the better since the goal is to try to have as little of the plant absorbed as possible.

inducing vomiting was easy as pie following their directions.  fortunately i had active hydrogen peroxide on hand to i was able to act immediately and it worked like a charm.  this is the ONLY advantage to having a dog that’ll eat ANYTHING.  he will also eat any meds i give him

by the time i got all dressed in coat, scarf, boots, hat and mitts, and let him outside he immediately started vomiting.  of course he ran into the middle of the front yard where the snow is over 2 feet deep.  silly goose.  but i was able to see a decent amount of saturated plant-like stuff which was a huge relief.  the poison controll centre gave me a ref number and asked me to call back once he had started vomiting so they could help me manage it.  this was fortunately easy.  by the time i was talking to a rep bogart had already stopped vomiting and was ready to play.

so i spent the rest of the day mopping up his excessive drool, fasting him and then bit by bit giving him water and food.  no more vomit!  yahoo!

i can’t believe he ate the plant.  man.  i’ve had that plant for weeks.  and in his 11 yrs he hasn’t ever once eaten any plant before this.  what a doorknob.   oh and the next day he ate another j-cloth.

***ETA DISCLAIMER:  i omitted the specific directions for inducing vomiting on purpose since this should only be done:

        1. when instructed by a vet
        2. for cats and dogs… i’m pretty sure NEVER for rabbits. in either case i’m not the expert on this.  check with your vet!
        3. in the correct amounts based on the animal’s weight

Bogart! Glad he is okay. He’s such a funny character even after having his slave induce vomit.

Oh my! I’m glad Bogart is alright!

My vet sent out a poinsettia warning in the mail at the beginning of December!

Poor Bogart! Glad he’s okay. I would have been scared too! Is there a separate poison control for animals?

i’m not sure but i think the poison control hotline was exclusively for animals. the emerg vet did say that they serve all of north america. i’ll find out for sure when they mail me the bill. it cost $70. not a bad deal considering it would’ve cost more to take him to be treated by the emerg vet. plus it included any amount of call-backs if bogart had any relating problems.

Hope Bogart’s job pays him well to help pay that bill…and your right, it’s MUCH cheaper than an emergency vet.

Wow, that’s a pretty hefty phone call.
