My little Smudge is spending the day with her vet today, last night she developed a slight head tilt, and completely lost her sense of balance. Still eats and drinks like a champ, but she falls over doing so. She could really use some good vibes from her BB friends!
Vibes for Smudge – I hope she is alright!
: (
{{{Smudge-Bug!}}}
Hopefully she’ll come good quickly since you’ve got onto it right away.
Vibes for Smudge! I hope she’s feeling better soon.
She’s at home, vet has her on 21 days of Baytril and a probiotic to take before the baytril to help keep her good gut bacteria going. She had blood drawn for an e. cuniculi test, results will be back in a week. He’s thinking an inner ear infection, but thought the test would be good to rule that out just in case. She’s snuggled in a blankie in the living room, propped against the pen wall as she keeps falling over. But, she’s about her usual self otherwise, demanding pets still and thumping if she isn’t impressed with something.
Oh no!
Super-mega-healing vibes for dear Smudge! (((((((((Smudge)))))))))
((((((Huge Hugs)))))) for you, MB. You must be so worried! ![]()
Yeah, we’re worried a ton about her. We just came back from a week and a half up in Canada yesterday, and last night she developed the tilt… Suspect that the excitement and change that brought triggered something. I’ll be sleeping on the floor with her and Monkey again tonite, I expect. If Monkey lets me sleep, that is. Last night, she climbed up my face a few times lol.
Aww! Prayers and thoughts for you and Smudge! Hope it is something easily fixed!
Poor little Smudge. (((((((Smudge))))))
When Bindi developed a slight head tilt, my vet suspected EC brought on by stress and put him on 30 days of Fenbendazole which fixed the problem in a couple of days.
More vibes for Smudge!
Vibes for Smudge! Here’s to a speedy recovery!
Vibes for Smudge! Please keep us updated with how she is healing.
How’s she doing MB? Is Monkey being a good girl towards her?
{{{Smudge}}}
((((Smudge))))
Vibes for poor Smudge… hope she’s recovering well!
Lots of vibes for Smudge!
Hope she is improving!
She’s actually getting worse.. her head is much more tilted, and now her eyes are drifting today. She’s eating more than just willow leaves now, but no hay or pellets or her salad, just parsley. Yesterday she seemed to be doing better, but today… not so much. Monkey has been snuggling with her, but has also tried humping her a bit too. Thats Monkey for ya… We’ll hear in a couple days how the test went, and in the meantime we’re hoping the antibiotics start working better.
((Vibes for Smudge))
(((((More Smudgie Vibes))))))
Oh no! More vibes for Smudge. Just like MB to take advantage…those nethies.
Poor little Smudge! Sending lots of healing vibes!
Sending lots of healing vibes for your Smudge!
{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Healing vibes for our Smudge}}}}}}}}}}}}}
Monkey, be a good girl and give your Mommy kisses when you jump on her face.
Got the test results back. She’s an e. cuniculi carrier, but does not have it herself. Yay! Vet says its definitely an ear infection.
Scary thing, though. Her head is now at a 90 degree angle, and she can’t eat or drink on her own. We have to force feed her now
And she can’t stop rolling, so we have her bundled up in a carrier. Poor Smudgie ![]()
Oh Monkeybun, so glad for the good bit of news, but my heart felt sympathies on what you are all going through! Good luck, praying the meds take effect Quickly!
Glad you found out what it is! To bad she is having trouble! Someone on etsy sells these beds for rabbits and it helps keep them in one place. Maybe something like this would help: http://www.etsy.com/listing/130685831/bunny-hugger-side-by-side-bunny-rabbit?
Oh no! Does your vet know Smudge is rolling so much now? From what I understand, that is usually a sure sign of EC – even if she didn’t test positive for it. I would definitely make your vet aware of that. Hope she feels better soon. ((((((((Smudgey vibes)))))))
MB, I know your vet is very rabbit savvy; is there a new test for EC now?
I always thought they did the two blood test (rising titer test) but it wasn’t terribly useful test anyway.
Hope you start to see effects of the antibiotics soon. I know a friend whose nethie got tilt last year took a couple months but he’s good now. It may take some time.
Nose rubs for pretty Smudge!
Oh poor bub!
The rolling stage is the worst, but it will pass. Hang in there!
Do you have one of those rubbermaid storage boxes? I used one of these to keep Mimzy in so he’d not hurt himself yet still have a bit of room to turn in once he got more stable. I put puppy pads in the bottom so he didn’t have to climb in and out of a litterbox and just put hay over the top, lined it with towels to buffer him. I kept it by my bed so I could put my hand into it when I heard him rolling overnight and he could stabilize himself by finding my hand.
Veggies will help with the water intake, or you could do sub q’s to keep her hydrated. It’s harder for them to retain water with the warmer weather now.
I’m sorry she’s having so much trouble. Head tilt is terrible. Mimzy still has residual tilt almost a year later and the vet thinks it’s due to nerve damage now.
But he’s still full of spunk so they can get through it. You can always email me if you want someone to talk to if you need to. (((((((Hugs))))))))) to you. xxxx
Thanks
TB, my vet does know, we gave him a full update today. Rolling is common with the inner ear infections too, as it gives them major vertigo. She doesn’t know up from down right now.
JG, he did do the titer test, not sure if he did anything else along side it, but his results said she’s a carrier, but not infected herself. He’s an awesome vet, and actually teaches exotic pet medicine here, so I trust him
MM, I have had her in the mini carrier today, but her and monkey both were getting bummed, so she is back in the little pen we set up in the living room for them. She’s much more comfortable in the corner propped up with her blankie and her monkey than she was cooped up. We’ll see how she does int he morning, if she needs to be more confined again. She isn’t trying to move much beyond to the water bowl a couple inches away, at any rate. I may just email you, it’s been awhile! And that reminds me, still have htat painting to send… i’m so blonde, i keep forgetting.
Poor Smudge. Sending lots of vibes for her. <3 <3
MB, I’m glad to hear you have been keeping your vet up to date on Smudge’s condition. Your vet sounds really in the know and I’m sure between the top notch vet care and your great nursing she’ll recover in no time! I get really bad motion sickness so I can sympathize with Smudge feeling like the whole world is upside down right now. Poor girl.
Jersey, I also have heard that the EC blood test isn’t particularly useful but perhaps things have changed. It’s been almost 6 years since I had an EC bunny and I’m sure some advancements have been made in that time.
So sorry to hear that Smudge isn’t feeling well. Sending you positive thoughts and saying a prayer for healing.
Thanks all! Today was a rough day. I had to work today, and had to feed Smudge when I got home. The feeding went well, but after, when I put her back on the floor, she couldn’t stop rolling, and just went limp in my arms when I picked her back up. Took her about 45 minutes to find her “up” so to speak. Was super scary
She’s doing okay now though, ate a couple pieces of parsley on her own and drank some water. She’s now snuggled with her Monkey.
Lolz…no worries about the painting.
I just remembered, if you can get a script for meclizine (generic Dramamine) you can crush those tablets up and syringe them to her and that may help with the rolling. We used 12.5 mgs twice a day…I think…maybe it was just one. Your vet will know better than me.
Mimzy had to get his while bunny burritoed and tranced, which I hate to do, but he wouldn’t take it properly otherwise and it really helped him stay on his feet. He got so much of it on his mouth at first that we started calling him “Your Blueness” after the Chief Meanie in Yellow Submarine. (eyeroll)
It did take his fur off his face if it got caked on…probably because he couldn’t wash it off. It didn’t hurt him, but his cheek was bald on the down side for a bit. 0_0
Nice to hear she is more comfy near ‘her Monkey’…
I’d be more comfy near Monkey too! xD
More healing vibes coming your way.
Doing worse today. I slept on the couch with her last night, and woke up ever 45 minutes to an hour because she was rolling.. had to rescue her from the evil water bowl a couple times and dry her off. This evening, she can’t find “up” at all… she’s getting worse, and she has been on the meds for a week now. Starting to think they just aren’t working at all.
Oh Monkeybun, I’m so sorry to hear of poor Smudge’s lack of progress!!! Are there other medications she could get? Have you thought of consulting the H.A.R.E. list: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/etherbun.html#otps? I understand they have a lot of vets and health experts, maybe they might be able to suggest something additional to try, … just a thought.
Sending you both prayers, … I so hope it gets better from here in.
This is where it gets hard. Mimzy was violently rolling by the end of the first week and, to be honest, it took at least another week before he wasn’t doing that as much. And sadly at least two months before he could find his feet and directions without help.
I was ready to PTS by the end of seven days, but my vet and the support I received through other bunny mums kept me going.
This is one of those things that gets worse before it gets better. There will be plenty of sleepless nights ahead, but I would encourage you to hang in there. I know it is really REALLY difficult and heartbreaking to watch. And I know Smudge-bug wants to be with Monkey, but as her symptoms worsen you may find you have to separate them, not just to keep Smudge from crashing into things, but to keep Monkey from feeling threatened enough to possibly begin having problems with Smudge. Sometimes the bonded mate will begin to attack the ill bunny and if you do have to part them, don’t worry… they can be rebonded after Smudge is feeling better. I’ve spoken to a few folks who have accomplished it with their head tilt pairs. Mimzy is not rebonded to Pip because they were separated too long before he got sick.
You probably haven’t had a chance to ask your vet about the meclizine with the holiday weekend, but please call him/her and see about getting Smudge a script. It could make all the difference for her once that heavy inflammation in the inner ear is calmed down.
If she cannot stop rolling, putting her in a large container with rolled up towels to buffer her will go a long way to helping her feel more ‘normal’. Mimzy actually learned to use his towel buffers to lean up on when he was eating and one time when he tried to periscope a little too soon, it sure helped to have them there so that he didn’t crash hard when he fell backwards. 0_0
Do you have her on metacam for the CNS symptoms? If so, how much? Mimzy was up to .25 mls twice a day and he now takes .3 mls twice a day without side effects. It really helps with the swelling in the ear canals that aggravates the balance problem.
What other meds is she on? Did the vet want to use fenbendazole on Smudge? Usually with head tilt that is added to be sure all infectious agents are covered.
As always…plenty of healing vibes and prayers for wee Smudgie. Thinking of you. xx
had to rescue her from the evil water bowl a couple times and dry her off.
Poor little doll. {{{Smudge}}}
I remember K&K used ice cubes for Chuck to lick instead of sipper bottle or water bowl. Maybe give that a go?
Did the vet want to use fenbendazole on Smudge? Usually with head tilt that is added to be sure all infectious agents are covered.
I’m wondering that also. If it could be added without too much stress to her system? With the titer rest you get false negatives and vice versa.
Poor little Smudge. Hang in there. We are all rooting for little Smudgie! ((((((Smudge))))))))
Well, we did call the vet today and told him how she is doing. He’s going to go ahead and give her a script for the panacur, just in case. and he did tell us meclizine would be good to get as well, and he’ll give us dosage instructions once we have it.
Last night, she didn’t leave the litter box at all, she can’t seem to find her feet enough to jump out now. So at least she is contained int here, and can go potty and eat hay. We haven’t had to force feed her for a few days, as her appetite seems to have been better. Thats a relief at least, especially with 2 new meds coming in today. No metacam though… I do have some, but I’ll ask the vet about it.
We did discuss separating the girls for a bit, but with her staying in the litter box, it seems to be going well. Monkey hangs out with her now and then, and bounces around the pen the rest of the time like normal. If they do start having issues,w e do have an extra pen to separate them into, and if they don’t rebond well… Squirrel has been eyeing them up. He does want a friend, and I suspect either one of the girls will bond well with him. We were actually going ot go for a trio when we got back from our vacation, but then Smudge had this happen the day we got back. So we’ll see.
Poor Smudge. I hope you can keep Smudge and Monkey together – I imagine Monkey will adjust well to any disabilities Smudge has.
More vibes for little Smudge.
Still sending prayers and {{{{Healing Vibes}}}} for Smudge!!!!
(((((((Smudge))))))) Gonna keep them vibes up till she gets better!
Continued vibes for Smudge!! Thanks for the comment on my post also, it really does help having people rooting for you!
Especially when you feel like such an evil bunny parent having to force-feed and the such!
Continued vibes for you also!
I know you are stressed out too!
Well, the girls are now in separate pens. It was just getting too hard for Smudge. Monkey would jump int he litter box, which would startle Smudge and cause her to roll. So its for the best. We do put Monkey in there now and then for some snuggle, so hopefully the bond will remain.
No real changes yet, except that Smudge is getting more comfortable with it. She takes advantage of me now, when I help her to roll back over, she’ll stop and wash her side that she hasn’t been able to while I am holding her. Opportunist that she is I guess ![]()
Sending more vibes for little smudge.
Continuing to send vibes for Smudge (((((((Healing vibes)))))))
How cool that she knows you’re trying to help and takes care of what she can while you snuggle.
I’m sorry to hear they needed to be separated but hopefully they’ll bond back together just fine once she’s better. A good idea to give them ‘visits’ so they stay acquainted.
Thinking of you all. xx
Ugh. Now Smudge needs to go back to the vet.. for her eyes this time. It looks to me like she has scratched one, the one facing up, and the other is red and swollen. Poor girl can’t catch a break ![]()
Poor thing, hope she gets better soon. Lots of vibes.
Awww Monkey, I read this on fb today but wow, so sorry. Let us know what the vet thinks and if you have to add any extra regimen for the eye, and give Smudge a kiss from me.
Oh poor Smudge! ![]()
![]()
Healing vibes for her eyes…please let us know how she gets on at the vet…((((((Huge hugs))))))) for you! xx
She has medicated drops for her eyes now. Nothing too bad with them, just a little red from her rollign around and banging her face on the litter box wall. The meds are just to reduce inflammation.
We did change her antibiotics though. The vet isn’t pleased with her lack of progress, so he’s upping the ante by giving stronger stuff. Hopefully it works.
Poor baby. {{{Smudge!}}}
I knew buns with tilt can get probs with the down eye but hadnt thought about the other. I suppose that one wouldn’t drain like normal.
Whats the new med youre trying? The antibiotics are needed but the can upset the tum a bit unfortunately. Hopefully she does well on them.
Keeping more vibes coming for Smudge! ((And for you!
))
The bottle says Ditrim, but the vet says it has a ton of other names. It’s a stronger antibiotic though, anyway. Still no progress…
Oh ok. Looks related the one we sometimes see shortened to TMS. (Trimethoprim )
Fingers crossed you get results.
{{{Vibes for Smudge}}}
I looked the detrim up it sounds very promising-I’m really hoping you see results soon.
Well, she’s willing to take this one anyway. I guess its tasty, she gobbles it up and looks for more.
She has found her feet a few more times today than usual, so crossing our fingers it’s helping!
{{{{{{{{{{{{Healing vibes for Smudge}}}}}}}}}}}}
I’m sorry if I am posting them here for the first time. I sent some in K&K’s post, then realized it would be nicer to send them here to you.
Here’s more:
{{{{{{{{{{{{Get well quickly vibes, Smudge}}}}}}}}}}}
I’m glad to hear she’s appreciating her meds more and seems to be having a good day.
This illness has quite a few highs and lows…sending vibes for more highs than lows ((((((((((Smudge)))))))))) xx
I hope you’ve been able to get some rest. I was the only one looking after Mimzy so I was on 24/7 for months…it was exhausting! 0_0
Tonite she has been trying to stand up a bunch, and keeps falling over and rolling. So she thinks she is feeling better, but it isn’t quite at that point yet.. silly girl.
I’m glad to hear she is still in good spirits.
(((((Smudge— Straighten up little girl!)))))))
Poor girl! At least she’s beginning to feel better it seems like!!
Continued vibes for her and you though!
Their attitude towards their illness is a big tell. She must be getting her confidence back. Good for her!
Continuing all vibes and prayers. ![]()
Okay… so, still no change.
Not sure what to do at this point.. nothing seems to be working for her.
Going to call the vet tomorrow, and see what else we can try. Yay for a vet open on Saturdays!
Good luck! More {{{vibes}}} for Smudge-Bug.
How many weeks into treatment are you? I wonder if they can identify if it is definitely ear infection or not? Might be able to do ear drops as well as oral meds then.
She still on panacur also?
Almost 3 weeks in, now. Yeah, still on panacur too. Plus the stronger antibiotic. It’s so frustrating, seeing her try to reach for a piece of hay, and fall over all the time ![]()
It really can be about two months before you see any improvement, MB. As long as she is still wanting to eat and do most of her normal things, she still wants to fight.
(((((((((((((((((Hugs and vibes for both you and Smudge))))))))))))))) xxxx
We did pick her up some metacam today too, so we’ll see if that helps
Posted By MimzMum on 06/09/2013 12:13 AM
It really can be about two months before you see any improvement, MB. As long as she is still wanting to eat and do most of her normal things, she still wants to fight.
(((((((((((((((((Hugs and vibes for both you and Smudge))))))))))))))) xxxx
Ditto. It took this long with my friends rabbit.
Good on her for keeping up the eating. You certainly don’t want that added stress if she wasn’t MB. Have you tried put hay and veggies in a rack if some sort? Or is she likely to bang into it?
Maybe she needs a little scarecrow!
She’s likely to bang into it. So, we hand feed her for now. Poor lady bug ![]()
Continuing jingles for Smudge… hope she starts seeing some improvement soon!
Have you tried hay cubes? generally if they aren’t well they don’t want anything but the good stuff, but I found Chuck would have a bit of alfalfa in a cube as it was easier to eat. Kahlua got into one a bit the other night too. I think it’s a bit easier to get to.
{{{Sending vibes}}}
I know what you mean about how draining it is to not see any improvement. It feels like you’d see something sooner. BUt I read an excellent article last night, not much new info, but just on and on about how long the recovery takes and it really gave me hope- http://www.rabbit.org/health/tilt.html
I just ordered some, so hopefully she will like them. I also ordered her a low profile litter box too, as she’s been wanting to get out of the regular one but can’t. She wants to sit near her Monkey ![]()
Awww I hope the litter box works! Kahlua is completely not using one, same as Chuck was, so I’m using puppy pee pads. What were you doing before you got the low profile litter box?
Well, I don’t have it yet. Right now, she’s in her regular litter box, which we have lined with a towel and a little blankie so its got nice footing for her. She rolls too much outside of it, so we decided keeping her int hat is better. She hates going potty outside her box, so she’s happier in it.
Oh that’s perfect! Did you see that bunny hugger bed that Megan posted on FB? It looks perfect for rolling bunnies http://www.etsy.com/listing/151520929/large-lambswool-bunny-hugger-side-by?ref=shop_home_feat
Yeah, been thinking about it. Once we get the new box, we’ll see if that would be a good thing for her too.
That bunny hugger looks good.
I think having her propped in her litter pan is a good idea. Bunnies seem so unhappy when they pee outside their boxes that I could see her feeling better in it.
Just checking in to top up more vibes for Smudge-bug (((((((((((((((((healing vibes)))))))))))))))))))))
When I had Mimz in the storage tub/hospital bed it was lined with towels which helped give him back some sense of spatial recognition. I’m sure the bunny hugger will help Smudgie.
(As long as she doesn’t like chewing on fabric, this is still an issue with Mimzy, can’t get him to leave the towels-or bunny beds-alone and they are all threadbare from him pulling them apart with his teeth!)
So sweet that she still wants to be near her Monkey.
How is Monkey doing these days? Has she gotten used to Smudge being tilted yet?
Monkey is oblivious to the difference…lol. She still climbs all over the place, sometimes steps on Smudge’s face when they visit.. same stuff to her
Smudge is still about the same though. She doesn’t chew on fabric, which is good. sometimes she will tug on it, but not chew. She’s a good little girl
I did pick up some more baby blankies for her yesterday, as she likes the feel of them on her little feets… heh
Have you tried meclizine yet? I’m here to push it, we dropped the dose on Thursday as we were running low, vet not in, etc… and I got to see first hand how important it is to her condition. If your not trying it yet, I can’t stress enough that you should give it a try. Kahlua looked like she was seizing when we went to 1/2 dose thursday, rolling etc. Within an hour of dosing her I saw the difference. The meclizine is really really helping (see Kahlua’s thread for more details)-but if it’s available in your area and you haven’t tried it yet, I can’t say enough that you should give it a go.
It’s really expensive here, because it’s compounded. I’m not sure that’s always the case, but ordering two weeks is the same price as one, so that significantly drops the price.
yeah we tried it, didnt help her at all, so after a week and a half or so we stopped it, she’s been getting plenty of meds and having so many shoved in her face has been stressign her a bit.
Can’t wait til that litter box gets here! Smudge is moving around, desperately wanting out of the litter box. So, every day, I pick her up, put her on the floor where she happily waddles around snuffling at hay and pellets and whatever suits her fancy. So, a little improvement at last! Except, she still wont go potty except in her box, so I need to sit with her until she shows signs of sniffing at her box and trying to climb in.. so, still a full time job. Once that box is here.. little Lady can waddle in and out of it as much as she likes.
Happy waddles are good. Mimzy does many of these.
How is she eating and drinking now? Any change in the tilt?
I know it’s a lot of hands on. But it really brings you closer to one another. And I wish I’d kept it up with Mimzy because he doesn’t really like being touched now, if I’d kept holding/fussing over him he might still want my attention.
Thinking of you and sending more vibes. ![]()
Also sending more (((((Monkey)))))) Vibes!
The tilt is still the same, no change in that. We still have to hand feed/water her, but hopefully that will change when she’s got the new box and can waddle around on her own again. We’ll see how she does with the bowls
The box is on the truck for delivery today… was supposed to be here yesterday grr.
It may take some time for her to regain her confidence, but when she does, watch out! You won’t be able to get a hold on her.
((((((((((((((More healing vibes)))))))))))))))) for Smudge. I hope she does better once she has her new box.
((((((((Hugs)))))))) for you. xx
(((Smudge))) I hope her tilt gets better soon!
Stopping in to send more vibes! ![]()
How’s she doing MB? Did the new box arrive?
Yes, the new box has been here a bit now, and she’s doing great with it
SHe can get in and out of it easily.
AND we have improvement! She hasn’t rolled in days, and can now drink on her own! Head is still massively tilted, but she’s ont he move. And she did her customary thump for dinner the other night too.. was so cute. It was so quiet compared to what she normally does, but it was there ![]()
Hooray!
Wonderful news!
So happy to hear there is improvement at last.
Long may it continue!
Thinking of you all and sending more healing vibes for Smudge!
Haha cheeky madam! I’m glad there’s an improvement! She must be feeling much better in herself now she’s not quite so dizzy, I hope you see more improvement this week (((vibes)))
I read on comment by Lee Meyer on allexperts that “Rabbit infections are hard to wipe out in just one month.” He was suggesting 2month course on antibiotics. Though this wasnt a question related to headtilt, I took his meaning as general for any infections in rabbits.
Hopefully you’ll start to now see more positive progress. : )
Hey just checking in for an update. How is Smudge now? Poor thing.
