So last night I was down letting the bunnies run out for a run in the basement. Rupert was doing probably the biggest binkies I’ve seen. (I think the secret is ‘out time’-they were free range in the apartment and just migrated to different sleeping areas, and at the old house they had a bedroom and did the same; here they have a big area, but when I let them out to run, it’s all binkies all the time) and it was so cute.

I’m watching him closely and see he seems to be missing some fur on the inside of his tail-hard to see. So I take a close look and see a big red spot. I freak, and we try to get a good look at it and it looks like the tip of his tail is missing!! I pack it with neosporin and hit the internet to see what could cause this-with no luck. Rabbits with tail injuries seem to be fine, with most people reporting no issues. So I calm down. But I’m still trying to figure out what happened. Mikey is never around them unsupervised, and never nips, so that’s a no. Their space and their run area is bunny proofed, and I supervise out time. I also don’t see a tip of a tail or a bunch of fur anywhere-or any blood for that matter! I don’t see how it could have been caught in anything. He can’t reach his tail so I’m sure it’s not overgrooming. Kahlua is not a biter, so it can’t be her.

I make a vet appointment this morning for this afternoon, and my boss so graciously lets me go to it, leaving early on a Friday when I have a huge caseload.

I’m explaining to my vet that I found this, that it looks angry but wasn’t bleeding, I see no evidence of when it occurred; She also saw how disguised it is-it’s the tip of the tail but inside to his bum so hard to see. But she notes immediately-it looks like a growth. Potential cancer, could be a benign growth, could be some sort of infection.

So for now, we are doing pain meds-for anti inflammatory properties. Anti fungal/bacteria cream. To see if we can reduce swelling and it may be an infection. She is meanwhile consulting with specialists and doing some research on how to take the tail off (how much really is what she is interested in) and different types of biopsies. We meet next week to look at progress and make a game plan.

I’m so sick. I was initally feeling so relieved that I didn’t do something stupid and let him hurt his tail somehow. Now I’m plotting to sell my car so I have the cash in case he needs to go to the University for radiation or something. This is going to be a hard week. Please send vibes for Rupert-if only that he doesn’t hate his mother for smearing his tail and forcing meds on him.

We don’t know how old he is-I adopted him just over four years ago, he was an adult but was a stray when they found him He’s certainly senior or almost.

Thanks for the vibes everyone. He’s so mad because of the vet trip and meds and handling it’s hard to see him eat, though he’s taking treats

Oh wow!  That would have been a scary discovery. {{{{{Vibes}}}}} for Rupert.

He was doing big binkies so you can at least know he’s not feeling too badly at least. I hope you can discover what’s going on soon and that it’s easily treatable.
I’m wondering about rabbit syphillis… They are seeing atypical presentation of the lesions now. I admit, the tip of the tail would be super weird place for it.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Sending lots of ((((( Vibes for Rupert)))))).

I think the waiting is the worse part of things like this. But it could very well turn out to be nothing serious. Are benign tumors common in rabbits? I know they are very common in horses but not sure about rabbits.

Try not to worry too much and give Rupert a hug from me.

It couldn’t be a hay seed abscess could it?. I know I have to be particularly vigilant around Piglets butt for seeds in the fur and a burst abscess can look very nasty. Thankfully never seen it on a rabbit but had one on Twinkle Toes Kittehs tail once and a neighbours cat had one on his front paw.

4 years now? Seems like yesterday that you got Rupert.
                            {{{{{{{{{{{{{Healing vibes}}}}}}}}}}}

Most tumors can be removed and that’s the end of it. I agree with JG – his binkies indicate overall health. So maybe he becomes a tailless bunny Manx and that will be all he needs.

I’m so sorry! At least he doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it. But I know figuring out what’s really going on can be scary.

You and me both, sweetie…it seems like our bunnies are the target of some bizarre otherworldly illness plot. But major ((((((((((vibes))))))))) for Rupert and giant (((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))) for you. I’ll be stalking this thread for updates.
God Bless…keeping a good thought that whatever it is turns out to be nothing. Let no bad happen!

                                  Thinking of you. xx

Thanks for all the vibes! I think I am in worry overdrive-watching him eat constantly because if he doesn’t eat with metacam and gets a tummy ache and then doesn’t eat we could end up in stasis-so yeah, being neurotic worry wart. He seems very pleased with all the attention but is hating cream time. And he’s a little bugger taking the metacam-it’s honey flavored, don’t know what’s wrong with him the little stinker.

It does seem to be small already-I noticed a small change yesterday am. Hopefully it’s just an abscess of some sort.

Thank you for all the vibes!!

It looks a lot better!Vet friday to report progress and see what the plan was, we talk again this friday and have another recheck, may have been a small scratch that got infected, but it’s just looking brillant, and considering the worst case we were considering, I’m thrilled.

Rupert however now hates me but has come to know that he gets treats after his bum-obsessed-mom comes to smear his bottom with cream lol
