Scooter here.  Some not so good news.  Annette and I have been out of town for the last week at a conference–in fact, I’m at the airport in Boston and Annette is home (couldn’t take the same flight back).  And Carbun’s in bad shape.

Carbun lives with Keelie in half of a bunny condo, which has four levels.  However, Carbun stays on the ground and 2nd levels only.  He doesn’t go to the upper levels because Keelie, and Kylie when she was alive, kept chasing him out of there.

My father-in-law took care of the pets when we were out.  Unfortunately, he didn’t realize that Carbun can’t get to the upper levels, and we didn’t point it out.  So he kept putting food and water on the 3rd floor.  Which meant that Carbun wasn’t getting food and water.

Annette got home this morning to find Carbun very dehydrated and not eating.  Apparently Carbun didn’t realize there was food and water just above him.  She’s gotten some Critical Care into him, and several mL of Pedialyte, and he is on his way to the vet now.

Carbun is not wanting food, and making a weird noise when he talked to Annette.  He was VERY interested in water, and was grooming himself.  So it doesn’t seem that he’s in super-dire straits, but he definitely could be better off.

We don’t think that Carbun’s been without food or water for more than a day or so.   We’re not sure how consistently the food and water has been placed on the 3rd floor, but if Carbun’s been without for the entire week, then frankly he should be dead by now.  Fortunately, the hay manger for Kylie and Keelie on the 3rd floor was moved to the ground floor last week after Kylie died, to encourage Keelie to spend time downstairs with Carbun.  So Carbun did have hay to eat, just no pellets other than what fell on the ground.

I hope he’s ok.  Annette may post an update, and I’ll try to check in when I get to my connecting destination.

Annette here. Carbun is just…. so pig-headed! He technically CAN get up to the upper floors, he just doesn’t like it. Mostly because as Scooter mentioned he used to get chased. Now that it’s just Keelie up there she’s not likely to chase him off. I really can’t blame my step-dad, because it never occured to us to mention to him that Carbun’s food and water are always on the main floor. I’m assuming he moved them when he was cleaning and then it just never occured to him that to put them back on the main floor.

The vet examined him and said she couldnt feel anything in his stomach. She gave him some sub-Q and some metaclopramide, and said that his temp is a little low and recommended getting some additional heat on him for a while so I’ve got a space heater nearby to the cage (but not too near and not too hot). He is making an odd noise – it’s a kind of gravelly, raspy noise when he would be making soft quiet little Carbun noises, so I’m thinking that’s because he’s been dehydrated and it’s the bunny equivalent of having a hoarse throat. It’s not pain-type noises. Oh and the vet said his teeth are fine, nothing there that would impede his eating.

I have been giving him critical care, which he doesn’t like, and apple pedialyte (since the drug store didn’t have any unflavoured) which he loves. I’m thinking that the next time I mix up some critical care I might use the pedialyte instead of water in case that makes it more acceptable for him. And just a bit ago he was nibbling on some romaine, so he has started eating a little bit.

On a side note, when I was at the vet’s office I was reminded that Kylie’s ashes were back from the crematorium and I could take them home. That was a little… freaky.

That’s a promising update thank goodness.

Just one of those over sights for sure! I guess Carbun could have gone up and drunk but maybe not as much as he needed? They stick so much to their habits which in this case was not ideal. Silly bun.

I hope he continues to improve.

Good to hear he’s on the way back. That raspy noise, there’s no respiratory stuff going on?
Silly Carbun, next time you’re thirsty, sweetie, go get that water!

No respiratory stuff. And it’s getting a little better as he’s getting more hydrated. But for a while he was kind of reminding me of the Cadbury bunny. But with scritching noise instead of bockbockbocking.

He’s also nibbled on some carrot, and some cillantro and parsley. Not a whole lot, just a little bit, but at least he’s showing interest in it. And he’s looking much more alert.

Thank you all for the vibes! Please keep them coming, I’m not convinced he’s out of the woods yet. I won’t feel comfortable with that until he’s eating properly.

They also can get weird about eating when their routine changes, ie. when you guys are gone away and there’s a different caretaker. I know cats can refuse food they don’t like and nearly starve themselves by being picky, but I thought a rabbit would forage far and wide eventually if hungry/thirsty enough. Maybe he has a little bug too, that’s got him feeling low and not well enough to have tried the upper levels.
(And was he sad about the loss of your other bunny? Maybe he thought his whole world was changing.)

Well we had Carbun back at the vet this morning, he seems to have developed a little eye infection in his right eye. It’s just a minor infection still so he’ll be getting drops for it 3x a day. He was also weighed (he’s gained 2 ounces since yesterday) and had his temperature taken (it’s up a degree from yesterday but still a little low) so the overall concensus is that he’s definitely improving. Yay!

Oh and apparently that odd little sound he’s making is him grinding his teeth. The vet said his teeth are just perfect there’s no physical reason for him to be doing it, she thinks it’s a stress reaction which would also explain why he’s doing it less and less.

Oh the little brat is pretty much back to normal, thankfully. The rims of his eye are still a little bit red but he’s still got a few days left on his eye drops and at least it’s not goopy anymore. And he actually “likes” getting his eye drops because after he the drops he gets 2 raisins and he LOVES that. He calmly lets me hold him while I get the raisins and the he stretches his neck out as far as he can trying to grab them right away. And his appetite is completely back to normal now!

Awww that’s good news. It’s funny how treats never get to bunny fast enough…they have to move closer anyway they can. Mimzy, even deaf, can figure out when a treat bag has been opened and he’d stretch over his habitat door and land on his head for them if I didn’t keep a hand on him.
                                                        Hugs for Carbun!
