Hey everyone! I just wanted to introduce you all to the new blog I started: cougvet.blogspot.com about going to veterinary school at Washington State University. I thought some of you medically-minded folk might be interested

Ohh, that’s really neat! I’m definitely interested in reading…vet school is something I did consider, but at some point I decided that I wanted to cut open people instead .  I’m curious to see how your classes and experiences compare to my own at my school!

Thanks, I’d love to know what you study at vet school. I’ll follow your blog.

Interesting! So is the business aspect often included in the general curriculum? Are your future plans to start your own practice or do you not know yet?

(If I can offer a tiny suggestion, the limited contrast between your dark red text box and the black font makes it a little difficult to read. Maybe play with the colors a bit? :o)

I would also be interested in reading about the pathway from high school to veterinary completion. Lots of people know more about medical degrees than vet degrees. How many years, what kind of undergrad work is necessary, what kind of internships, etc…

I agree, it is a bit difficult to read.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Stay posted for all sorts of info on vet school, including getting in and what kind of education I have had prior to vet school. I’ll also include pics of procedures too!

For quick answers: I was a Biology major at a small private school in western Washington, and an English minor. I took Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Math classes (more detail on my blog later). As for veterinary experience, they usually want you to have a minimum of 1000 hours before applying; I had about that, over half of which was experience in an equine exclusive practice in northern Idaho. Which I loved. Equine medicine is definitely my area of interest.

The business aspect of veterinary school isn’t necessarily required, but the VBMA is a club that allows vet students to get a certification stating we have business training. Also, the vet school offers classes on practice management, client communication, etc. I’m not sure if I’ll own my own practice someday, but I want to be as prepared as possible. Also, taking those sorts of classes makes you a better job candidate later.

I also changed the font color; any feedback on the lighter color? Any other feedback? I am still in the process of working on it, so it’ll probably be more fine-tuned by this weekend.

As usual, thanks guys; you’re all awesome!

Oh yes, much easier to read!

Does this vet school have a good equine medicine department? I’ve heard that some vet schools have better programs for exotics and some better for livestock and dogs and cats, etc…

I had a friend try forever to get into vet school in the US and just couldn’t – apparently it’s very competitive and there are not that many vet schools in the US like med schools. She ended up going out of the country, St. Kitts I think.

Definitely interested in reading! My top pick for colleges right now is in Washington, because of the location and I can bring my horse. I would either like to be a medical doctor or a vet. So I would definitely love to hear about how vet school goes for you and how you got there!

Oh good, I’m glad you can read it more easily! Yes, WSU has a good equine medicine and surgery department, especially for this region. We have a fairly good caseload and great equipment. We’re a pretty well-rounded school, so there are opportunities for a lot of interests here.

Getting into veterinary school is definitely difficult; there are less than 30 vet schools in the US at the moment, which makes it super competitive. There were about 1100 applicants for the WSU Class of 2015, and about 110 got in.

Bunnyfriend-are you in undergrad, or are you looking at undergrad universities in Washington at the moment? If you have any questions or want to chat, please feel free to private message me!

Stay posted for more blog updates! I hope to write more this week and definitely this weekend.

I’m still a junior in high school, but I go to an IB college prep school so college is being planned out early for me (I get my diploma at the beginning of next year and then will be entering as a sophomore or junior depending on what college I go to). Thanks!
