        Hi.

My rabbit Benny hasn’t been eating or doing the toilet for the last 2 + days now. We took him to the vet where he was kept in over night and they did X-rays. It showed no blockages or anything unusual. We took him home and he still wouldn’t eat or do any toilet. We’ve since took him back and the vet doesn’t actually know.  They are going to do blood tests.

Our other bunny is with him at vet to keep him company.

Has anyone experienced this before and know what it could be? It is very unusual how he won’t do anything.

The only thing they could find is a slight discomfort for him in abdominal area. He’s had pain relief medicine and gut medicine but he still isn’t eating. They are having to syringe feed and have a drip for him.

This reminds me a bit of my own bun. Is your rabbit vet rabbit savvy?

My bun had to be hospitalized f + 2 days. The resident vet managed to get us a consultation with a rabbit savvy vet, thank goodness. The rabbit savvy vet said there was a partial obstruction in the small intestine. Treatment was IV fluids (drip) and painkillers (novalgin).

We got to tske him home again on a regimen of watery critical care (syringed), meloxicam (1.5 mg per kilo body weight once every 12 hours) plus Pepcid famotidine). No gut motility drugs since that’s contra-indicated when there’s a GI obstruction.

Hi. This is helpful I am about to go see him as he’s staying in overnight. So I will talk to the vet. Soo far we’ve had 3 different people dealing.

they gave us pain relief meds and gut meds. But seeing you say that isn’t what should be used if it is GI stasis is concerning. Especially after first night stay they said he was clinically well and X-ray showed no blockages.

i really hope they can get to the bottom of this soon.

Do you have any advice on what I should ask the vet? I go in the next hour.

Ask them if iv fluid drip could be an option. In some countries vets can show pet owners how to give subcutaneous fluids at home. In some countries, this is prohibited by law.

Lactulose to increase the volume of the intestinal content is sometimes prescribed. If no obstruction is suspected, a gut motility drug like metoclopramide could potentially be an option.

Pain control is always of the essence when it comes to buns.

I think there was a miscommunication in the thread above. Bam was saying that motility meds shouldn’t be used if there is a blockage, but they are used for stasis. Sometimes a combination of multiple meds is needed . The two main motility meds are metaclopromide and cisapride, they affect different parts of the gut. It sounds like your bun is getting treatment, but may need dif meds or just more time and gentle supportive nursing care. I would resist the urge to do aggressive tests or treatments, especially if the vet is not 100% rabbit savvy. Sometimes the treatment is perfect but the bun needs more time to respond.

Encouraging movement in cases like this can help too. One of my bridge buns Bun Jovi was at the vets with stasis and he wouldn’t poop for two days until they put him in one of the exam rooms to run around. Then he finally pooped all over the place!

Obviously worried has anyone experienced anything like this before for their bunny
