I’m taking Ford to the vet on Monday because for a while I thought he just molting, but I noticed his scratching has intensified and that bald spot at the back of his head has gotten way bigger and I saw a dry patch of skin looking a bit red probably because he scratched it His ears also have two small bumps on the outside that seem like they’re just dry skin, but now I’m concerned he has mites. I’ve taken him outside a few times and so I was wondering if it turns out to be mites and I get him treated, could he still get it again if I take him outside?

Also how much do you think his first trip will cost?

He’s still a happy bun but he doesn’t like to be petted as much right now.

If they’re mites, you’ll need to treat him, and his bedding and soft toys (if he has any). The mites may have come from the hay, or he could have picked them up outside. If you want to keep mites off of him, you’ll need to use a preventative at regular intervals after the initial treatment is done.

In terms of a consult, I think for me they usually cost around $60 (Australian). If you get a prescription of something that will obviously bring things up a little more.

Ok, that’s not too bad. I was thinking like $100-$200. That would be my nightmare haha

It is also is really clinic dependent, but a consult (unless possibly with a specialist after a referral) should never be more than $100. You can also ask the cost when you ring to book for an appointment.

If it’s mites, then you will like just pay for the office visit and the flea treatment. Be sure to get Revolution or Advantage. Never ever use Frontline on a rabbit.

I read in your profile that you adopted him from a rescue / shelter. Did they recommend any vets to see?  There might be some sort of discount.

You might like to look into the insurance VPI has that covers rabbits. Might come in handy in the future for any unexpected vet bills. It’s $12 a month.
