Eve’s (she is a 2 y/o spayed female) partner Theo passed July 1st very unexpectedly. One Friday he was eating his lettuce slow but still eating and active so we made a vet appt for Monday, and on Sunday he started having very labored breathing, and died a few hours later. Eve started having small amounts of snot, so she was put on antibiotics, prescribed for two weeks worth. Tomorrow was supposed to be the last day of antibiotics, and she’s been eating and active and her poops have looked GREAT these past couple weeks, but today… super duper small poops. Theo had these poops before he died, and so did a foster bunny of mine who died.
I guess this is more of a “I need to tell this freakout to people who understand” than asking for advice, but I’d also like to know possible causes and what people think.
The only thing that’s changed is that the other day I gave her a rice pop. I know they’re not great for rabbits, but I didn’t think just one would hurt, and I know lots of people who give their rabbits rice pops with no issues.
Could the rice pop be the cause of this? Could it have caused a blockage or something?
Another thing to note is that we tried to give her fresh papaya (she loves the dried ones) for the first time, and she won’t touch it, which sort of concerns us. She is happily eating her lettuce though. I can’t tell if she’s touched her hay or pellets.
Also, we got a pet tortoise the other day. He’s in a separate room, but my boyfriend may have touched the tortoise while giving him mango and then immediately offered other mango with the same hand to Eve. I don’t think this would affect anything, but honestly who knows.
Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Also, we callled the vet’s office to ask if we need to bring her in, but the vet tech said if she’s eating and still pooping she’ll just have the doctor call us tomorrow with her opinion

I can sympathize with your worry of course, but small poop is an observandum, not a harbinger of death. It means she has eaten less fiber than she should. y Bam gets small poop sometimes. Hay and water are the best things for this. If you can get fresh clean grass (no pesticides or raccoon poop) it’s just as good as hay but often a lot more popular (give sparingly if she’s not used to fresh grass). To get her better hydrated, a small amount of leafy veggies dipped in water can be given.

As for the papaya, rabbits are well known to refuse food the first time(s) it’s served to them. My Yohio was terrified the first time I served him a slice of banana, he wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Another member’s bun freaked out when he was presented with a strawberry. It’s within the scope of normal rabbit behavior. They usually try it the third time or so. Is she willing to take other treats that she normally loves?

You can give simethicone gas drops if you suspect gas. It can also have a bit of a lubricating effect. It’s not taken up by the body, but gets pooped out. It’s still of as baby gas drops at for example Walmart.

Exercise is important for the workings of the intestines and a light tummy massage can also be helpful. Here’s a great video on how to massage your rabbit: http://youtu.be/JnuxGLa2reg

              I’m sorry about Theo.
Do you have her on pro and prebiotics while she’s on antibiotics? Antibiotics can kill the good gut flora in the gi tract and make their tract slow down or go into stasis-that’s what happened to mine. I personally wouldn’t give a rice pop because the amount of sugar in them. Does her belly feel hard or doughy? Does she seem painful?
Personally, it seems like you have a bacteria that is being passed around. Did the vet culture it to see what it is and the best meds for it? You can always leave out cc on a plate and see if she’ll eat it, but you want to get fiber in her (hay or cc) to get her tract moving normally.
Since Theo had passed from the same symptoms, I would bring her in, if your gut tells you something is wrong then take her in. That’s what I did when one of mine went septic and found out both him and his partner had multiple things wrong. You might get called crazy bun person for being so sensitive to changes but if it makes you feel better, then do it.
