I’m so very sad and in shock…my sweet little cat Mystee has cancer. She went in yesterday to get her teeth done and they found a large growth underneath her tongue. ![]()
She had been losing weight so we brought her to the vet about a month ago and blood work diagnosed her as having hyperthyroid. She’s also been drooling a lot and having a hard time eating so we made her an appointment to get her teeth done. The vet suspected cavities. She was supposed to go in December 22, but Wednesday night her mouth started bleeding pretty bad while she was eating so I called the vet and they said to bring her in and they would keep her overnight so she would be there first thing in the morning and they would fit her in whenever they could get her done. I got a call yesterday afternoon. My vet was really upset to tell me she found a growth under her tongue. That’s what was causing all the pain and drooling. She said she’s 100% sure it’s cancer because of the size and location of it and surgery is not an option. Our only options were to give her an anti-inflammatory to make her mouth more comftorable but even then that might only buy us a couple of weeks. The other alternative was to put her down.
As soon as Ricky was off work, we went to the vet. My vet had left for the day so we talked to another vet who sounded more optimistic. She said she’s seen cats live anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, the longest being 9 months, in this condition. We can give her the anti-inflamatory shot every 2 to 3 weeks, if needed. As soon as they brought Mystee out I knew it wasn’t time to put her down. She was so happy and purring to see her Daddy (she’s Daddy’s girl) and they said she loves the food they were giving her at the clinic so we bought her a bunch. So she’s home now. Eating lots and sleeping. It’s strange though, she’s sleeping in her carrier that she went to the vet in.
It was just total shock. When we originally brought her in due to the weightloss, I wouldn’t have been so shocked if they said cancer then, but they said she was fine, other than her thyroid. All week we’ve been telling Mystee that we’re going to “bring you to the vet to get you fixed up”. The poor girl is a mess from drooling.
We’re not going to let her suffer though. She will tell us when she’s ready. It’s hard dealing with this at this time of year, especially. We lost our cat, Nefera, last year right before Christmas. Mystee is 15 but I’m not ready to let her go.
I’m so sorry… Hugs.
Hugs to you.
So sorry its never easy when our pets get sick. I had to put my 16 year old dog down this summer and I went back and forth for months before I did it. He didnt have cancer but he has doggie dementia and no quality of life at that point. Hang in there. Mindy
I’m so sorry, LPT. I know it’s heartbreaking. You will both do your best to give her the quality of life she loves as long as she is not suffering. When the time comes, you will help her over the bridge as well. Letting her let you know when and watching the signs or discomfort is a good way to partner with her in her care.
I lost Spockie on December 7th in 2007. No matter when these things start to happen, it always seems wrong somehow.

I’m sorry. Dealing with a senior pet is really difficult. My husband had to put his 17 1/2 year old cat down in March.
Back when the cat was 15, he started showing signs of his decline. He was always a huge cat. He loved to sleep in small boxes like a shoe box, always reminded us of Garfield. But by 15 he started losing a lot of weight. We took him to the vet and blood work showed hyperthyroid, and his liver was failing. She estimated he would only be with us 6 more months tops without treatment. We declined any sort of treatment, seeing as how he was old, and treatment may cause more harm than good. So we put him what we called on kitty hospice. I am not sure at what point after that it was, but my husband noticed Sonic was not eating. It was because his teeth were is such bad shape it probably hurt him to eat. So we switched him to exclusively wet food, and chopped it up into small pieces so he could eat. He then started to gain some of his weight back, but not much. Each year since that year we figured. “This may be our last Christmas with Sonic”. Never made the holidays easy. But that cat kept going long after the vet figured he would leave us.
Not even a year later and we are dealing with advanced age kitty #2. Our long haired black kitty Sassy, the boy cat who was raised as a girl, is showing signs of getting to the end. He is losing weight and not caring for his fur like he should. He used to be my husbands grandma’s cat. He took Sassy in after his grandparents had both passed. So we do not know his exact age. He was a little younger than Sonic, so probably somewhere between 15 and 17.
I know what you are going through, and it is tough. But if Sonic is any example, cats can surprise you. He just did not want to leave his humans until he was ready.
I’m sorry LPT. My kitty had cancer too. He had a tumor on his side. We decided to have him put down because we didn’t want him to suffer. He was the sweetest kitty ever and I still miss him.
That’s really aweful news LPT. I’m glad she still has a high quality of life, and I’m sure you’ll make the right decisions for her care.
LPT I am very sorry to hear this. My husband’s cat had cancer under his tongue. We also knew when he was ready. In the meantime enjoy your kitty and try not to think about the cancer. I’m keeping you in my prayers and will be thinking of you and Mystee. I can’t answer pm’s from my phone, but feel free to message me if you need an ear…maybe I can get you my email addy from my son’s pc.
God bless and big hugs ((((((((((((hugs)))))))))
I am so sorry LPT. This really is a hard time to deal with something like this. It’s really good that you are keeping her comfortable and giving her extra tasty food! I am sure she is enjoying that and knows how much you both love her. Ill keep you all in my prayers. HUGS!

I am so sorry, hugs. This must be really difficult ![]()
I am so, so sorry. I know how difficult this must be for you. We are all sending peaceful vibes to you, lots of hugs, and healing thoughts to your kitty.
Thanks, everyone. I can’t believe how much she is eating.
She constantly wants food. I don’t know where she’s putting it all; she’s so tiny. I guess she’s probably taking advantage of her mouth not being so sore. Yesterday she just slept in her carrier all day when she wasn’t eating but when Daddy came home she snuggled on the couch with him. That was really nice to see.
Oh, that’s good to hear. One day at a time…
{{{Mystee!}}}
I’m so sorry LPT! I hope the time you enjoy each other in the time that is left.
