So I’ve finally decided to break down and buy myself a vermicomposting unit. I’ve been wanting one for a while, but haven’t had the money to get it. Well, unless something happens and I end up having to spend the money on something else, I’m going to be ordering one in the next couple weeks. I was just wondering if anyone else on here uses one of these and any suggestion they had. Do you suggest Red European Nightcrawlers or regular red worms? Do you keep yours inside or outside (I’m probably going to try keeping mine inside and see how that goes)? How is the smell? I’m pretty excited about the whole thing lol

I don’t know anything about it personally, but there was a news story a few weeks back of a teacher who had a garden in his yard – the neighbor complained constantly of the smell of his compost (which was vermicompost) so apparently there is a smell issue with it. But, a very well made enclosure is supposed to be able to fix it.

Compost will smell depending on what kinds of things you’re throwing in there and the conditions. I don’t have an outdoor composter, but my in-laws do. It sort of smells in the heat of the summer. We have an indoor composter, one of those electric ones (it uses about the same amount of power as a 12 watt fluorescent bulb). I don’t really notice any odor from it. It’s in the garage though. I’m not sure how those worm ones are. We looked at them before we bought this one and decided it was too big.

@Stickerbunny – That’s why I decided to buy a unit instead of trying to build my own because everything I’ve read so far has said that as long as you have the right unit and it is made well, the smell shouldn’t be too bad. I guess we’ll just have too see. Thanks for the answers

I have an indoor vermicomposter – it’s one of the ones with 3 stacking bins. The only time I can smell anything is when I open it up to put more veggie scraps in there – and even then it’s not really an offensive smell. As long as you follow the instructions, they’re pretty easy to maintain.
