        Hi!

My baby is due for his first annual vaccination booster and I’m terrified. All I can see is horror stories on bunnies reacting badly, getting sick and/or passing away.

Do you have any advice? Things to look out for or to help them cope?

I assume you live in the UK since the states do not do vaccinations?

I’m hoping someone experienced can help you

Well, there is a risk of course but that’s the case with everything. I wouldn’t fret too much. I think there was a member here whose bun went into stasis after a vaccination but that is literally the only horror story I’ve read/seen. And as serious as stasis is, if you’re vigiant then it can be very easy to treat compared with myxmatosis for example.

If you’re really worried I would just make sure you’re home with him for the rest of the day and night. He might be a little quieter after the vaccination at first but should still eat and poop and whatnot.

Hi! Our vet asks us to stay in the waiting room of the clinic for about 30 minutes after the vaccination and she checks him again before we leave. Like this, you can be there if something bad happens.

As Sarah said, you can monitor him that day and night. Also, maybe you can schedule the appointment for the morning, like this you can be awake the rest of the day <3

My bridge bunnies had vaccinations yearly and every 6 months for Filavac. One of the buns had a mild reaction to the old vaccine that isn’t in use anymore, other than that, there were no adverse reactions. A rabbit can get a local reaction at the injection site though, so you can massage the injection area lightly right after to prevent the vaccine form pooling under the skin, because that’s what can cause irritation.

Yilina’s vet’s approach sounds good, maybe you can ask your vet if you can sit in the waiting room for 30 min after, if it’s a calm waiting room (without barking dogs etc).

To help them cope you can have some favorite greens on hand for the same evening. Keep an eye on them of course. I am wary of vaccinations too, but I’m in several local Facebook groups and I can’t really remember any bad adverse reactions with the Myxo-RHD or the Filavac (if you are in Europe).
