I plan on going out of town for a week in August & I’m trying to make sure my bunny has everything it needs while I’m gone. She’s a 4 month old New Zealand breed who lives outside in Northern CA. I’ll have a neighbor come by every other day in the afternoon to check her hay & provide frozen jugs of water to help with the heat. She has access to fresh water from a waterfall feature my husband built for her. Any other recommendations to keep her happy while we are away?

Does she get pellets or greens? Every other day doesn’t seem ideal, could your neighbor check in daily? Especially if there’s a heat wave, not sure which part of N.CA you’re at but it often gets up to the 90s this time of year. How long are you gone for?

Every other day is not often enough. When a rabbit gets a health issue (such as not eating), it can become life threatening within 24 hours (the first 6-12 hours after the problem starts are critical). Also if she ran out of hay or water (although that sounds like it’d be unlikely with the waterfall!) there would be no one there to refill it for far too long.

So your pet sitter should come twice a day to refill hay, water, and ice jugs if it’s hot.

Could they trade off with someone else so someone comes (at the very least) once per day? Twice a day would be ideal.
