I have had my beautiful rabbits for four years, they have been neutered and are vaccinated every august. Life has been busy and I didn’t get get round to vaccinating them this year and unfortunately I lost one to suspected RVHD yesterday. She was dead within 12 hours of early symptoms, i got her to the vet as soon as they opened but she died on the table there. It was the most heartbreaking thing Ive experienced and I’m devastated as well as carrying the terrible guilt.

The vet thinks there’s an extremely high possibility my other little one will also have the virus and might die within ten days. She was seems okay right now but she was extremely well bonded and must be missing her friend terribly. They are outside in a double hutch with a huge run. The huge problem I have now is I don’t want to leave her out there so alone all day and night. I can’t get another rabbit because of the risk of this virus. My home is quite small but I’m happy to buy a smaller hutch and bring her in. But will this complete change of environment be too stressful for her? She’s also a chewer so I would have to watch her all the time.

I can’t stop crying over this whole situation and I just don’t know what to do. Any advice or ideas I would be so grateful for. There’s no one I can talk to who undertakes why I’m so upset over just a rabbit, but they’re not to me. I want to do all I can to make her happy. Thank you.

Oh I’m really sorry for your loss. You’ll find we absolutely do understand how upsetting is is to lose a little fur baby.
          Binky Free Little One.

My own instinct would be to bring her in, purely because she is also at risk of contracting the virus if she is not currently immune. The hutch could also be contaminated althoygh, I think that is more a risk with myxomatosis.

This will also give you a chance to keep a close eye on her.

What vaccine did they typically have?
I have seen suggestions from rabbit beta to vaccinate 10-11 months after the last shot as they were seeing more cases of vaccinated rabbits coming in with illness, when they were only a month away from needing the booster. Again, this was with myxomatosis.
