  Hello everyone! Long time no see! I just got back from my vacation and the rabbits are absolutely POed at me. My mom was the one taking care of them while we were gone. She made sure they were fed, had their treats, and their litter was changed. Unfortunately, she didn’t ever work up the courage to let them out to play that entire time. She said she would go to give them their treats and they were practically bouncing off the walls. *sigh* Of course, they desperately wanted out. I greeted them the second we got home last night and they wanted nothing to do with me. I’m feeling really sick though today, so I haven’t been able to pay much attention to them. I feel really bad.

  Awe…..feel better soon! And despite not being let out, they really were/are fine. And I think we all come home to ticked off bunnies when we’ve been on vacation. lol They’ll get over it. It may take a few days but they will!

  We went to Colorado and yes it was fun! I have a picture of a Colorado bunny, I will have to find it when I go through the pictures and post it on here. My only concern is that Wooly’s hair is now an absolute mess. I don’t know what to do. My mom was too afraid to brush him while we were gone. Perhaps I should just shave him down and start over with his hair. Gosh, I just don’t know. He’s going to have a bunch of bald spots if I cut them out anyway. How could his hair get so bad so fast?

  Mine was willing to cut off a bunch of matted poopy butt hair that Kate had developed at the shelter, so it’s worth a shot. Just say you feel uncomfortable or scared to do it yourself.

  Aww, they’ll forgive you! We left the bunnies with a friend for almost two weeks and he didn’t let them out the entire time (and they were in a 4’x4′ xpen, which is smaller than their usual space). He actually had a nice space to let them out where they couldn’t get in trouble, but he tried once and it made him nervous. They forgave me though!
  
  I’m sure the vet will help with the mats – mine has cleaned up poopy butt for me.

  I would be okay doing it myself, but I would need clippers other than the dog clippers. My husband would have to actually be effective in holding him though. I will call the vet and see what they say. I feel so bad. I know my mom was doing her best, but it obviously wasn’t okay for him to go without being brushed.

  Okay, I was able to get a price quote from the vet. They said it would cost $120 to shave him down because they would need to sedate him. What do you think? I looked at new clippers at Petsmart that are supposed to run quiet and cool and they cost almost $200. Plus I have no idea if I could hold him still long enough to shave him. I’m thinking it would be safer to have the vet do it. Thoughts?

  Yikes. It’s not the fee but the fact that they will sedate that would make me nervous. Is that the norm?

  I would take him in. Might as well let the professionals handle it and it’s cheaper too. LOL But I am concerned about having to sedate him though. I would want to find out if they completely put him under or if they just put him in a “twilight”. I wouldn’t think they’d have to completely put him under though. Well, that’s what I’d be concerned about if it was Lolli.

  I’m not sure. I guess I can understand why they would do it though. I certainly wouldn’t want him to freak out and hurt himself. I’m trying to imagine how I would do it myself. You would have to hold him so he couldn’t wiggle around, but then he’s so little that how would you actually use the clippers if your hands are in the way. Know what I mean?

  Michelle – I didn’t ask. To me sedate means that he will just be calm, not completely out. But maybe that’s not what it means.

  It would be cheaper & safer and just a one time procedure at the vet then buying clippers and attempting it yourself. Less worry for you and he won’t associate the experience with you either.
  
  I’m surprised at how quickly they can become matted! Anyway, if the vet hasn’t actually seen the mats yet, it might turn out to be something they can manage without sedation yet.

  I could understand putting him in a “twilight” so he remains calm. Can you use a pair of grooming scissors to clip the mats? When Lolli had poopy butt, I bought a pair of cheap dog scissors with rounded tips to clip out pieces. Lolli hated it all in general, but she tolerated it. lol

  When I got Stickers she had horrible mats on her neck sticking her fur together with glue from the fact the kids put stickers onto her fur in her last home. I let the vet do it, there was no way I could hold her still and shave her without hurting her. Now, we just had it done with her spay surgery, so she was completely knocked out – so not sure if they would completely put him under for just a groom.
  
  If they are all over his body, I can’t think of how you could hold him without being in the way. If he’s relatively calm like my Powder might be doable – Powder will sit still with just my hands around his shoulders for grooming, but with a bun that risks a freak out I would just go with the vet.

  Jersey – I was shocked as well! I brushed him before we left. He had some small mats on the backs of his back legs that I told my husband he would need to help me with when we got back. The mats aren’t really what I would consider mats. To me, a mat is hard and compact. What he has is really difficult to describe. The fur has thickened in places, like the fur is woven together into massive knots. I tried working on them, but they are impossible to brush through. I have to rip them apart. My mom did not let the rabbits out the entire time we were gone, so perhaps it was from him sitting and rubbing on stuff? I just have no clue.
  
  Michelle – I could cut them out, but he would literally be half bald at that point. Might as well make it all the same.
