update on baby bun’s runny eyes

just got back from the ontario vet college with baby girl.  they’re specialists in exotics & my vet referred us since baby’s eye had not cleared up with the ciloxan or gentocin drops.  good grief they took so long to examin her!  her appt was at 1:30 and we weren’t leaving until 5pm & $250 later.  anyways… they said she had really great looking teeth for such an old gal.  they found that her tear ducts were quite plugged up.  they anesthetized her to scope her & to flush the tear ducts but weren’t able to get them quite unplugged.  so we have to go back in 2 weeks.  they said that sometimes a 2nd go around will clear out the ducts if the first flush doesn’t do the trick.  she has more eye drops.  this time it’s ofloxacin 3x daily.  fingers crossed that this helps.

baby drank some water after her exam (i brought a little dish of water for her) and was munching on hay the whole way home.  she seemed fairly relaxed on the way home.  maybe she’s still dopey from the anesthesia?  she shifted around a bit but always ended up with her back thumpers kicked out.  so sweet.  she also was very receptive to head pets & ear rubs from me

one thing they didn’t address is how the tear ducts got clogged in the first place.  i totally fogrot to ask.  of course i’ll ask that in 2 weeks when we go back but in the meantime, does anyone know typical causes for blocked tear ducts if the teeth are all okay?  just curious. 

anyways… baby is now resting uder her chest of drawers – her safe haven and i’m off to decorate a t-shirt with a group of girls in my cancer relay-for-life team.  cheers!

I’d like to know that too, how they get plugged.  Wow that’s a long visit!  What a drag you have to go back.  Poor little Baby. Did you have a litter box with you? I wonder if this is what’s wrong with o0Panic0o’s eye???? Good luck with that eye.

Wow, what a process, Glad to hear she took the treatment so well. Shadow holds a grudge like no other. I would be interested in hearing why the tear ducts clog. I remember my grandmother having the same problem and having them cleaned out. (I remember cause I was so freaked by the details) Per the opthomologist…it is an old age thing. So who lknows.

she seems to be in pain right now.  i can hear her teeth chattering every now & then.  not constant & just slightly louder than a tooth purr. 

i imagine that getting the tear ducts would be painful but i hope it subsides soon… the poor thing.  she’s still under her dresser & wouldn’t come out to greet me when i laid down on the floor.

Oh poor baby! Do you have any metacam you can give her? I would think that possibly a cause could be an infection.

thanks guys!  i just gave her some metacam… i forgot i had some leftover from pinky’s spay.  good thing i saved it.  poor thing is even less pleased with me now if thats possible.  at least she’ll fell better when the meds kick in.

i remember now that dr raghav said the ofloxacin drops were anti-biotics so i guess they’re assuming infection too?  and that the ciloxan or gentocin just didn’t do the trick.

Wow yowch with the vet bill BBM! 

I am going to hazard a guess and say that it sounds like your baby might have a resistant eye infection and so the other eye drops didn’t work.  Tear ducts can get clogged from infection, too many tears that do not flush properly and cause a bacterial infection or even narrow nasolacrimal ducts.

baby bun ate all her greens & dug into her morning pellets.  plus she has been lovin’ up the dog as usual all morning so i think she’s feeling much better.  hence, i’m feeling much better

I’m so glad she’s feeling better! Juli got a clogged tear duct once, but all we did was do some saline drops to get it unclogged – maybe you could ask the vet if saline eye drops would help Pinky at all. Maybe Pinky will come over to give you some love to get herself some more Metacam

i’ll def ask about the saline drops.  we’re scheduled to go back to the guelph vet next week for her 2nd flushing so i’ll ask all my questions then.  dare i say… her eyes seem dryer with the drops she’s getting.  we’ll see if it sticks this time.  fingers crossed.

My Coco has a weepy eye. I think that’s probably why he had’nt been adopted sooner. He was on 2 different medications before I got him. It comes and goes with him. Seems like its back so I plan to take him to the vet this month and see what can be done for him. It does’nt seem to bother him. He still eats/drinks and runs.

mzmette one of the articles scarlet_rose gave links to above talks about lops being more prone to tear duct infections.  i think they said because their tear ducts are typically shorter than other breeds.  i wonder if coco’s weepy eye is a really infected & clogged tear duct like baby’s?   baby doesn’t seem affected by the runny eyes either but i was always worried that it’s a prob that will worsen.  good luck with the vet… let me know how it goes & how your vet suggests to treat coco.
