Upcoming Bunny owner, Need Help

Im going to be a bunny owner and I was planning on having my bunny both free roam around my room and in a cage when I wont be available for an extended amount of time. is this recommended, having it half free roam and half (whatever you call in when its in a cage) or should I just keep it in a cage?

Having your bunny free roaming when you are home is the best thing Far better than just keeping them confined to a cage all the time. My previous bun Bandit was free roam in the house when I was home. My current pair are similar but they have a large playpen they have access to instead of half the house. The get shut in their large DIY condo cage when we’re sleeping or at work. Most days they have at least 6 hours of time where they have access to their playpen.

Yes having free roam time for rabbits is the best thing

Even when in their cage, rabbits need enough space to do 4 hops and stretch up on their hind legs. For this reason, many people put a puppy exercise pen around the cage, so the rabbit can get out safely to stretch while you are gone. It also gives you more room for toys and a nice sized litter box.

When I first got Thor, she was confined to her cage when we were gone/asleep. Then I got a playpen to give her more room while we were gone. Eventually, she proved that she could be well behaved and she is just shut in the kitchen while we are gone/asleep and free range the whole apartment the rest of the time.

Hi MooseBunny! Like Azerane and ThorBunny mentioned, allowing your bunny to utilize space outside of its cage, is a really great idea. I would definitely ensure that you have minimal objects on your floor that your bunny could potentially get stuck within, or can easily fall over. I allow my rabbit to roam my room too, and I have found that having a hidey house outside his cage encourages him to frequent his available space more often, and for a longer amount of time.
