› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Unwell rabbit and out of ideas!
Hi Everyone,
Sorry to be posting this as my first post but I really don’t know where else to turn.
I have three rabbits (Bunny, Luna and Roo), two are bonded (Bunny and Luna) and Roo is next to the bonded pair.
They are indoor rabbits and have large areas to roam in our front room.
Bunny is 5 1/2 and has not been very well lately.
First he stopped eating so we managed to take him to the vets and we got him some pain killers, antibiotics and that has worked (every now and then he does this).
The main issue is that he is now wetting himself and weeing anywhere and everywhere.
Since this has started happening we have taken him to the vets for an X-ray and more anitibiotics. X-ray came back ok for kidneys but they flushed them anyway.
Blood tests also come back and showed that it was all ok.
Vet said to just monitor him and keep cleaning him.
We also asked another vet at the same practice for a second opinion and also asked about EC but the vet said they do not believe it would be this as everything else seems to be ok.
This was almost 3 weeks ago now and we are having to dry him every morning and night also putting vasoline on his skin where hair has fallen out. We Change litter twice a day (megazorb) and it did appear that he was getting drier and drier.
However today we noticed he was weeing more and again everywhere and during our evening clean he was more wet than usual and then he let out some sludge and then clear wee after that.
We are going to monitor again over the next few days but are going away on holiday next week and have another bunny owner looking after them.
The bills are going up and up and of course we would do anything for our bunnies but it’s becoming a struggle in identifying the root cause and getting him better.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
He has always eaten just pellets (small amount) and Timothy hay and drinking is not an issue as he has been drinking more left, plus poos have been normal.
He is happy in himself and is always looking for more food.
Thank you
Hayley
Poor little guy!
It really sounds like EC to me. It can often cause kidney problems which can be seen through excessive uncontrolled peeing, which can normally be noticed because of damp legs and butt.
Is your vet rabbit savvy? I would recommend looking for another, as most vets that know about rabbits treat for EC on suspicion, with symptoms like your buns. It’s an easy course of treatment and the tests are often inconclusive so it’s easier to just treat in case sometimes.
The other thing that would be worth checking that it doesn’t sound like has been checked is his teeth. Often overgrown teeth can cause buns to go into stasis, and some buns will lose litter habits with pain.
Sudocrem is a good cream for urine scalded legs
you might also want to try puppy pads to help absorb pee if he’s not always making it to the litter tray
Hi, so I have no idea what the source could be as I’m not a vet or anything, but I have been in the same situation as you and I just wanted to give some support. If you’re going to a rabbit savvy vet and they know what they’re doing, then you have to trust them, and know that they are doing the best they can. I know it’s so hard, because you haven’t a clue what’s going on, and you’d do anything for your buns but you don’t know how to help them. But if he is behaving normally and eating normally, it obviously doesn’t mean he’s completely fine but it’s a very good sign. Spend every moment you can with him, as you never know what could happen the next day. Sorry this is kind of depressing
Sending all the love and healing vibes your way
Hi there. Im sorry about your baby. I honestly would try to find another rabbit savvy vet. Is he eating and pooping normally now?
It could be his kidneys are not working properly but showing up fine on the test and causing him to keep peeing so much he doesn’t have control over it and also, EC could be showing the same symptoms. He could have lost the bladder control to hold in the pee in the litter box so he will pee all the time. EC is in buns already and it could show up on a test that he has it but his EC might be elevated but it never hurts to see.
My bun is in the hospital for stasis and sepsis so I know how much those bills can be. I would leave him at your vet (is there a 24 hours exotic vet near you? they could monitor him all day and night and see what is happening and then talk about new tests). Tests can be a lot but its better to rule out anything so then you know what to do next instead of just waiting and since you are going away next week. Did the vet ever give him fluids? He might be dehydrated and is pulling water from everywhere in excess and making him pee way more.
I hope you can get him all fixed up soon ![]()
I assume you meant vasoline, not gasoline.
I agree with S&L, puppy pee pads would help wick the moisture away quickly. Plus ointment that is meant to protect the skin and soothe irritation (diaper rash cream, Sudocrem, etc.) would help prevent/treat urine scald.
There are documented cases of EC where the bunny only exhibits urinary symptoms. Sometimes it is accompanied with a little hind end weakness as things progress. If your vet is willing to prescribe antibiotics, then I don’t see why they would be against treating for EC just in case. You can test for EC, but the tests are not very reliable. You can have false negatives. You can also get positive results in asymptomatic rabbits. Just because your other rabbits are not exhibiting symptoms does not mean they have not been exposed to EC. Most rabbits are exposed to EC at some point in their lives. Most do not become ill. Hopefully that helps. If what you’re doing isn’t working, then there is nothing wrong with having the vet entertain other possibilities. You just never know.
Thank you for your replies.
We did start with Sudocreme but the vet advised to use vasoline as it would perform a barrier to any urine and Sudocreme can be flakey.
Also we have purchased panacur ourselves but when asking the vet they said it didn’t sound like EC as that usually occurs in younger rabbits and by giving it to an older rabbit it could possibly have an adverse affect on his liver, so this scared us somewhat.
We have been considering going to another vet as we currently use vets4pets which is within petsathome.
The issue is finding a rabbit savvy vet I guess, should we just look out for exotic vets?
Thanks!
Since you mention pets at home I assume you’re in the UK? The Rabbit Welfare association has a list of approved bunny vets, and you can search for one that’s near you

Yes, from the UK!
Thank you, I’ll have a look ??
That’s so sad! I hope he gets better!
Since you mentioned he stopped eating once, have they checked his teeth? When my rabbit feels pain he goes to a corner and sometimes even pee himself, maybe the same is happening to Bunny. ![]()
Thanks, they checked his teeth the first time he stopped eating however since his last episode of GI stasis this more hungry than I’ve ever seen him before now!
We ended up taking him to a bunny savvy vet for more advise, they’ve put him on tremadol in case of any spinal injury that’s causing this and are treating all three bunnies for EC just in case it is that.
His going back to the vets in just over a weeks time for a check up and also to take another sample of his urine as it was quite diluted, they mentioned something about having diluted urine if they have a urinary disease so hopefully his next one comes back ok.
Fingers crossed we start seeing an improvement with my little man!
Thank you everyone for your advise, It’s truely appreciated!
Thanks for the update! I hope you see some results.
I believe if you sign up to RWAF organisation, you have access to more detailed info. They might go over some protocol for cleaning habitats when you suspect EC.
S&L, thanks for passing on link to rabbit savvy vets.

Clear urine can be an indicator of kidney disease. My Jersey had urine as clear as water later in her life. She also began to pee everywhere but it always seemed controlled. She also drank a lot more water then.
I recall reading it was hard to test for kidney disease as usually markers only showed up in advance stages of disease. That was some year ago…fingers crossed they’ve better ways to detect it now.
i hope he makes a full recovery ![]()
Sounds like a plan! Keep us updated!
Sending along some ((((Healing Vibes)))))
Thank you, since his been on his new medication – tremadol and panacur for 28 days, his not been wetting himself and has been a lot drier! We are so happy with this improvement. Fingers crossed it will continue after the meds are finished! ![]()
Such good news! Yay!
That’s great! Glad to hear he is doing better!
Glad to hear the positive update!
