Type of cage, where it should go?

What type of cage would you guys recommend for rabbits? I am new to this, so I don’t know where to begin. And also, is it ok to keep a rabbit cage in your bedroom on top of the carpet, or should I put it somewhere else?

It depends on whether your bun will be confined to his/her cage – one of mine has a dog crate and the other has a pet shop type cage. Both are small but they have free roam of the downstairs (they currently have half the downstairs each as they are separated) What I’m saying is, my cages are small but they aren’t ever confined to them, that’s just where they can go to have a bit of peace and quiet if they so desire. When they are bonded, they’ll go back to sharing the dog crate but again, they’ll continue to have free roaming of the house. If your bun will be confined for any length of time, you’ll need something big and spacious. Plastic bottom rather than wire, and yes you can just put it on the carpet.

Agreed – plastic bottom definitely. Luna’s cage is in my bedroom sitting on top of carpet, and when she was younger she used to dig/bite at the carpet furiously when out. If her cage didn’t have a plastic bottom, she probably would’ve ingested tons of carpet fibers – very bad for buns.

Hey there, yes you can just put the cage on the carpet, you just need to make sure you cover the carpet with something at first to prevent toilet accidents while you are litter training, and secondly to protect the carpet from bunny chewing. One thing to keep in mind with having a cage in your bedroom, is that rabbits are often very active in the early night and very early morning, so if you are a light sleeper, you may have trouble with this.

Dog x-pens/play pens are often recommended as cages because they are big and versatile. If you have a rabbit that isn’t inclined to jump or climb out, they work really well and offer a great amount of space. NIC or C&C I also recommend, I have one myself for my pair and it works great, offers plenty of room and is good for rabbits that might otherwise escape a play pen. I generally don’t recommend store bought cages unless you have a situation like Sarahthegemini where her buns are constantly free range and are never shut in their cages. Although some people do use the XL sizes of dog crates as cages for their buns with success.

Thank you, and thank you to anyone else who helped me! Part of the reason I asked about the carpet was because, I didn’t know how messy the carpet would get if I had my rabbit cage in my room. I have heard they are very messy, you can’t vacuum up hay, and sweeping on the carpet with a brush and dust pan seems difficult. How do you guys clean up messes on the carpet?

I generally sweep the big bits and hoover the rest. A lint roller would work well though!
