I am a concerned owner of three rabbits one buck and two doe .anyway last night when I fed them they were healthy drinking and eating..well this morning I got up and the two females were dead sprawled out in their cage I can’t imagine what happened? Can you give me insight I have a little girl they belong to who will be home shortly from school and I don’t want to tell her her show rabbit and breeder rabbit or both gone I just want to have closure and understand what could have happened to these perfectly healthy rabbits yes they are outside but they have stayed outside for over a year through snow and all even though we’re in Southeast Texas and it doesn’t get that cold we did have snow this year but that was last week and they made it through just fine this morning was only 50 here and the buck was fine and alive in the cage ,but both does we’re both dead I just need some answers please help thanks in advance ?? Sincerely, Joley

          Hi Joley!

I’m very sorry you lost your girl buns. Without a necropsy it’s not possible to say what took them. Sadly it’s not too uncommon for rabbits to die unexpectedly, they’re expert at hiding illness. Sometimes there are no detectable symptoms.

I’m sorry I don’t have any answers for you.

It’s extra sad that the buck is all alone now. Is there any chance he could be moved inside so he doesn’t have to be lonely? Rabbits are very social creatures.

            Hi Joley,

Sorry for the loss of your bunnies!

When I was younger, I had a similar situation with my first bunny, we just found him dead in his hutch one morning. The vet said that maybe he’d had a heart attack from smelling a fox sniffing around the hutch. Rabbits often have very weak hearts, so perhaps something scared them both.

I agree with Bam, your male probably feels very lonely now, so please make sure you keep an extra eye on him.
