So before going to work in the morning, I usually draw the curtains in Kurotta’s room to make sure he gets some natural daylight. However sometimes I don’t get home until it’s night time, so when I go into the room and turn on the lights, Kurotta squints and/or looks a little dazed because he probably had trouble adjusting his eyes to the sudden bright light.

I imagine that it’s the same as us squinting as we switch on the lights after getting out of bed, but since bunnies are so fragile, I’m just wondering if this is actually harmful to a bunny’s eyes long term?

        What do you guys think?

I wouldn’t think it is harmful to his health

You didn’t ask about this specifically, but I had the same problem a while back. In the winter it gets dark so early that it was pitch black by the time I came home from work! I felt like it would be confusing to Thor to have such a strange light/dark schedule. I picked up a cheap light timer at the hardware store and it’s been working well, now the lights just automatically come on later in the day.

I don’t think it’s harmful, but Thors idea is great. In the wild, rabbits live in extensive warrens under ground without any light except what seeps in through the holes. So our buns’s ancestors must’ve been used to going from complete darkness out into the daylight. Wild rabbits are mostly active at dusk and dawn but I do see them outside in daylight every day, they seem to like to lounge on lawns on fine days.

I have a night light I keep plugged in for them at all times. It’s low enough that the whole room isn’t lit, just enough for them to see around their cages.

                Thanks for your thoughts everyone

We don’t have four seasons here so it’s pretty much the same amount of daylight all year round. In the morning he does get light seeping through the sides of the curtain, while at night the street lights outside provide some sort of illumination, albeit minimal.

I’ve read that bunnies can in fact see in the dark – it’s just that their vision is limited?
